Heart at Work : nurturing ownership and passion

I get asked

  • why I'm always all in

  • why i'm hustling before dawn at 5 am

  • why do i do what i do ...

here it goes...

In the realm of professional life, there's a profound difference between merely working a job and embracing your role with the heart of an owner. This distinction isn't just about the title or the responsibilities that come with it; it's about the passion, the drive, and the commitment to make an impact. For me, this approach to work isn't just a preference; it's a way of life.

My journey into adopting an owner's mindset wasn't accidental. It was cultivated through a combination of personal inspiration and professional experiences that taught me the value of loving what you do. At the core of this philosophy is a simple but powerful mantra: love what you do, and do what you love.

The seeds of this mindset were sown by observing my father. His dedication and approach to work, not just as a job but as a personal mission, left a lasting impression on me. This was further reinforced by my experiences and learnings from some of the most transformative leaders and companies of our time—Alibaba under Jack Ma, Bytedance led by Zhang Yiming, and the visionary paths carved by Jeff Bezos at Amazon and Elon Musk at Tesla.

What do these leaders have in common? A relentless pursuit of their vision, a passion for making a difference, and a commitment that goes beyond the conventional employee mindset. They work not because they have to but because they are driven by a desire to create, innovate, and lead change.

Today, I find myself inspired by another entrepreneur— Robert Vis of Bird. His passion and commitment are not just professional attributes but are worn as a badge of honor, a testament to the belief in what he does.

Imagine a world where every professional operates with an owner's mindset. It's a world where work is not just a series of tasks to be completed but a canvas for passion, innovation, and impact. This approach transforms challenges into opportunities for growth, tasks into missions of importance, and workplaces into incubators of change and excellence.

But how does one cultivate such a mindset? It begins with finding what you love and allowing that passion to guide your professional journey. It's about setting high standards for yourself, taking responsibility for your work, and committing to continuous improvement and learning. And importantly, it's about making an impact—not just in terms of business outcomes but in contributing positively to the teams and communities we're a part of.

This philosophy is not just for the entrepreneurs or the top executives; it's accessible to anyone willing to approach their work with heart and commitment. It's a mindset that transforms the mundane into the extraordinary and turns every professional journey into a labor of love.

So, as we head into another bustling week, let's challenge ourselves to work not just as professionals but as owners of our domains. Let's infuse our tasks with passion, embrace our responsibilities with dedication, and commit to making an impact in everything we do. Because when work is love, the possibilities are endless.
