How to Create a Linkedin Headline for a student (with Examples)

Research has shown that 7 people land a job through LinkedIn every 60 seconds, yet only 20% of LinkedIn users have an optimised headline.

If you're a student or a recent graduate with minimal experience, you might be unsure about what to mention in your LinkedIn headline. But don't worry too much about it!

Here are some examples of LinkedIn headlines optimised to help you increase your visibility and opportunities on LinkedIn

An effective and well-optimised LinkedIn headline can greatly boost the number of views on your profile. This could lead to more chances, like landing your internship roles or an interview, maybe. Because this might lead to more frequent profile views by hiring managers and recruiters viewing your profile. Changing your LinkedIn title only takes two minutes, which could significantly affect your network.

If you're new on LinkedIn and do not set a headline, LinkedIn will assist you in setting your school as your default headline, it could be “Student of Niger Delta University”. You do not want that to happen, so take 5 minutes of your time to brainstorm on what to use as your headline.

I have a formula that will make it easy for you to adopt

  1. Formula 1: State your current status; Are you in school? or a recent graduate. “Marketing major”, “Design Major”, “Accounting”, “Software Engineering”
  2. Formula 2: Highlight your relevant skills; Find out two or more relevant skills needed in your field and the choice of study/industry. Include keywords that recruiters are searching for, and if you have any certificates you have done also mention them.
  3. Formula 3: Express your career aspirations; for example, use phrases like “Aspiring” + career, “Future Role or “Seeking” Opportunities in (certain Industry). Please be specific about the type of Role you are looking for. You might be looking for an Internship, but then what type are you looking for? So what you would have is “Marketing Internship”
  4. Formula 4: And lastly, add a personal touch; Mention your unique strength or Unique Value: For example, Passionate Digital Marketer|Marketing Major|Content Marketer for School magazine

More Examples:

  • "Computer Science Student | Aspiring Software Engineer | Skilled in Power BI”
  • "Marketing Major at Niger Delta Uni | Future Content Marketer | Seeking Internships in Digital Marketing"
  • "History Graduate Student | Researching the Roman Empire Times AD | Passionate about Public History"
  • Business Admin Student at National Open University | Building Skills in Finance | Actively Seeking Entry-Level Roles
