How 'Frolleagues' Are Redefining Travel, Work Culture & Streaming Habits in 2025

Coined as a quirky portmanteau of “friend” and “colleague,” the term frolleague emerged in early 2020s. What began as a side-effect of long Zoom calls and Slack emojis during the pandemic has since turned into deeper, genuine friendships formed at work, often becoming one of the strongest support systems in an employee’s life.

Work Besties & Binge Lists: Here's the Frolleague Era

A Microsoft Work Trend Index (2024) reveals that 66% of India’s Gen Z and millennial workforce have formed deep friendships at work and over 40% prefer travelling with a work bestie over family or school friends. Be it spontaneous road trips or oh, "we-deserve-this" long weekends, frolleagues are setting up definitions for what downtime looks like.

Streaming habits and pop culture have played a big role in strengthening these connections. A shared interest in a series, podcast, or creator often becomes the starting point for deeper conversations. According to a BookMyShow Stream report, OTT subscriptions among working professionals aged 24–38 in India grew by 47% over the past year, with many citing “shared watchlists” as an icebreaker and stress-buster. Office groups now plan trips based on shows and series. Netflix even reports that content co-viewing on mobile devices during transit is up by 60% compared to 2023.

Workplace Culture Is Catching Up

As per the SHRM India’s 2024 Workplace Culture Report, 31% of mid-to-large organisations have introduced structured peer engagement initiatives, including informal offsites, bonding budgets, and team-led outings. Firms like Zoho and Freshworks have adopted flexible retreat policies, allowing teams to unwind together after intense delivery cycles. Infosys, in its FY24 ESG disclosures, shared early success from cross-functional peer circles designed to reduce burnout and improve project cohesion. Meanwhile, companies like Swiggy and Razorpay are apparently moving away from traditional, top-down team-building and instead supporting peer-driven breaks and meet-ups.

Why is any of this required? Because it has a measurable impact: Gallup India reports that employees with strong work friendships report 42% higher satisfaction and 33% better productivity. It improves collaboration, eases communication, and contributes to a healthier work culture without needing formal team-building workshops.

Conclusion: Social Bonding, Streaming & Shared Interests

In 2025, work friendships are reshaping how employees recharge, collaborate, and stay engaged. As companies go from enforcing culture to enabling connection, the rise of the frolleague shows that people don’t merely want to work with others, they want to work well with those they trust. And that starts with something as simple as a shared show or a long weekend plan.
