How High-Achieving Woman 40+ Can Optimize Sleep for Better Productivity & Hormonal Balance.
If you’re waking up at 3am, struggling to fall asleep, or feeling exhausted no matter how much you do sleep, the issue isn’t just stress—it’s a deeper misalignment in your nutrition, gut health, and cortisol.
Here’s what is typically going on behind the scenes in your body:
1) Blood Sugar Imbalances – If your blood sugar crashes overnight, your body spikes cortisol, waking you up. Poor meal timing, UNDER-EATING during the day, the wrong protein-fat-carb ratios, can keep your body in a cycle of restless sleep and cause insomnia.
2) Gut Health Disruptions – 90% of serotonin (which converts to melatonin) is made in your gut. If your gut is inflamed, malnourished or imbalanced, your body struggles to produce the sleep hormones you need. With poor gut health, melatonin production is compromised and a well-balanced gut microbiome is essential for deep sleep and productivity.
3) High Cortisol at Night – If your stress hormone stays elevated in the evening, your body resists deep sleep. (Are you scrolling Instagram? Or checking your work emails from bed?) Chronic stress or overworking lead to disregulated cortisol rhythms, where your energy is low in the morning but surges at night—causing difficulty falling or staying asleep. High cortisol also suppresses deep REM sleep, leading to poor recovery and next-day brain fog.
As high-level business owners and executives, sleep is essential for your success and to prevent burnout. It cannot be an afterthought as it greatly affects your performance in life.
So how can you correct these imbalances?
Address your nutrition: are you getting adequate amount of nutrients, especially protein?
Address your gut health: are you eating prebiotic foods, probiotic foods, are you supporting your gut microbiome through proper supplementation?
Nervous system regulation: do you address the stress living in your body through breath work, meditation, visualization and improved evening routines to calm your disregulated body down?
All of these practices will lead to deeper more restful sleep which in turns allows you to function at a higher level for your career, biz and family.
