How I Created a Movement for Sustainable Transformation in Tourism and MICE?

Planting the Seeds of Change

When I began my work in sustainability, I never set out to create a movement.

I simply wanted to help businesses in the tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industries reduce their environmental impact, operate more responsibly, and align with global sustainability standards.

But as I engaged in training, consulting, and collaborative initiatives, something unexpected happened. My work started rippling outward—teams began rethinking how they operated, industry leaders started setting new goals, and organizations began reaching out not only for compliance—but for transformation.

This is the story of how I created a growing movement for sustainable transformation across Asia’s tourism and MICE industries. It’s a story of alignment between purpose and profession, of pushing against inertia, and of building capacity where there was once confusion.

If you're a leader in hospitality, tourism, or events wondering how to make sustainability real, not just a buzzword—this article is for you.

Chapter 1: From Concern to Calling

Like many of us who work in sustainability, my journey started with deep concern.

I was seeing firsthand how the rapid growth of tourism and events in Asia—though economically beneficial—was leaving behind carbon footprints, cultural erosion, and unsustainable infrastructure.

I remember standing at a beachfront resort, watching plastic waste drift in with the tide as a luxury event took place nearby. That moment stayed with me—not as guilt, but as motivation.

The tourism and MICE industries have immense power: they shape perceptions, drive economies, and connect people. But with that power comes responsibility—and that responsibility wasn’t being addressed fast enough.

I asked myself: “What if I could empower the very people behind these industries to lead the sustainability charge themselves?”

That was the seed.

Chapter 2: Gaining the Tools – GSTC and SACEOS

To turn passion into action, I needed to ground myself in global standards and frameworks.

That’s when I became a certified trainer under the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). Their globally recognized framework allowed me to help hotels, DMCs (Destination Management Companies), and tourism boardsalign with the four pillars of sustainable tourism:

✅ Sustainable management

✅ Socioeconomic benefits to the local community

✅ Cultural heritage preservation

✅ Environmental responsibility

In parallel, I worked with SACEOS (Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers)on the development of event sustainability certifications, recognizing that large-scale events are key players in the sustainability conversation.

These credentials not only enhanced my technical expertise—they gave me a voice that industries could trust.

Chapter 3: Turning Knowledge into Action

Equipped with knowledge, I began the real work: bringing sustainability into boardrooms, meeting rooms, and training halls across the region.

I delivered tailored training sessions for:

  • Luxury hotels looking to align with ESG goals

  • Small and medium-sized DMCs seeking international recognition

  • Event companies organizing world-class conferences in Singapore and beyond

Each engagement was unique—but the questions were often the same:

  • “Is sustainability just a trend?”

  • “Won’t it cost us more?”

  • “How do we even start?”

I realized I wasn’t just teaching frameworks—I was shifting paradigms. And slowly, company by company, change began to take root.

Chapter 4: Creating Ripple Effects Across Asia

One of the most powerful parts of this journey has been seeing ripple effects beyond the training room.

Case Study 1: A Hotel Group Transformed

After completing GSTC training with me, a regional hotel chain didn’t just implement basic practices—they built an internal sustainability committee, tracked their emissions monthly, and began sourcing locally for 60% of their F&B offerings.

They later told me, “We never saw this as a competitive advantage—until now. Guests are asking about it. Staff are proud. It’s become our identity.”

Case Study 2: A Green MICE Breakthrough

One of the MICE companies I supported through SACEOS achieved Certified Event Sustainability status, and used it to win a tender to host a major international sustainability forum. Their success inspired other vendors in the ecosystem—AV, catering, and venues—to also pursue certifications.

That’s when I saw it: this was no longer about one company. It was becoming a movement.

Chapter 5: The Human Side of Change

Sustainability is not just science—it’s human psychology.

Much of my work involves shifting mindsets:

✨ From short-term profits to long-term resilience

✨ From compliance to culture

✨ From resistance to ownership

I’ve learned that people don’t change because they’re told to. They change because they feel empowered to, and because they see sustainability as part of their legacy.

During one workshop, a hotel GM said:

“I always thought sustainability was the job of my operations manager. Now I see—it’s everyone’s job, starting with me.”

Moments like that remind me why I do what I do.

Chapter 6: Challenges and How I Overcame Them

No movement is born without resistance.

1. Skepticism

Early in my journey, I faced leaders who were skeptical. “Show me the ROI,” they’d say.

I met this head-on with data-backed case studies and custom metrics dashboards showing energy savings, guest satisfaction improvements, and long-term brand value.

2. Greenwashing

Some businesses wanted “just enough” sustainability to put on marketing brochures. I challenged them with this:

“Sustainability is not a badge. It’s a journey. Are you ready to walk it—or just wear it?”

This honesty, though tough at times, earned trust and deeper commitments.

3. Capacity Gaps

Many companies lacked trained staff or dedicated resources. I built train-the-trainer modules, enabling in-house champions to carry the work forward after I left. This created sustainability from within, not just from outside consultants.

Chapter 7: The Movement Today

Today, I’m proud to say that the seeds planted years ago have grown into a network of sustainable leaders across Asia.

Through:

  • Ongoing GSTC trainings for hotels and DMCs

  • SACEOS sustainability certifications and workshops

  • Private consulting for tourism boards and regional event companies

…I’ve seen hundreds of professionals become agents of change.

They are not just meeting standards—they are setting them.

Chapter 8: What This Journey Has Taught Me

Looking back, this journey has taught me that true impact comes not from information—but from inspiration and integration.

What began as an individual effort became a collective shift. The key was:

Empowering local actors to lead

Building systems, not just strategies

Fostering community, not just compliance

It wasn’t always easy—but it has always been worth it.

Chapter 9: Where We Go from Here

The urgency for sustainable tourism and MICE is greater than ever.

  • Climate regulations are tightening.

  • Stakeholders are demanding ESG accountability.

  • Travelers and event attendees are voting with their wallets.

This is not the time to wait—it’s the time to lead.

That’s why I remain committed to expanding this movement, partnering with businesses across Asia to embed sustainability deep into their DNA.
