How I got a job on Late Night Lycett after doing a free course

"It’s pretty cool to say I played a part in the production of Late Night Lycett.

"So how did I get to be a trainee in the costume department on Joe Lycett’s Channel 4 prime time TV show I hear you ask!

"I was one of thousands of people who applied for a place on the Late Night Lycett Trainee Programme, which is part-funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority.

"It was through word of mouth that I found out about the course run by Create Central and I ticked all the criteria - I’m over 19 (I’m 22) and living in the West Midlands. What’s reassuring is that you didn’t need any previous experience of working in TV.

"It’s free too, so I thought why not give it a go and I’m glad I did.

"It was such a great experience to see the behind-the-scenes process of live entertainment for television. I really enjoyed watching everything come together such as the rehearsals, the co-ordination and the overall management of the production.

"From the outset what really stood out for me was that part of the camp was held at The Bond in Digbeth which is where Late Night Lycett is filmed.

"Learning in a real environment made the experience so much more immersive and engaging.

"The spontaneous nature of live TV and how things evolved throughout the day each of show is something that can’t be taught in a classroom.

"I’ve always believed in the importance of collaboration and the trainee programme presented that. It also provided me with a space to use existing skills and apply them in a different context, which was a great opportunity to reflect on my creative process.

"Working in costume and wardrobe has improved my management and organisational skills which will help me in future projects I work on.

"I would absolutely recommend the trainee programme for people who want to get a glimpse into the process of live television. And if you are lucky enough to get a place – make sure you have a great time and take each day onsite as it goes!"

Great opportunity to have! When I met Joe at Hay Festival he called me 'Sutton Coldfield Royalty'. What a card he is lol 😆
