How to Make a Decision (Even in a Blizzard)

You know how people sometimes joke about branding themselves as "that one thing" person? Like the Spreadsheet Guy or the Email Queen? Well, I’ve been saying for a while that I should brand myself as the How to Make a Decision Lady.

Only I’m not joking.

Because here’s the thing: most people don’t struggle with not knowing what to do. They struggle with deciding to do it.

Last week, a client asked me, “Becca, how is it that so much bad stuff happens in your life, and you still show up happy, confident, and professional? How do you do it?”

So I want to share an example.

Earlier this week, it was 70–80 degrees and beautiful. I took my kids to the park at night. It felt like spring.

Then, out of nowhere: Blizzard.

We got over 10 inches of snow, 65-mile-per-hour winds, and downed 300+ power lines in our area. We were without power for four days.

But here’s the greatest thing I’ve ever learned in life. It came from my mentor, Jack Canfield, the author of Chicken Soup for the Soul. He taught me a formula that changed everything:

E + R = O

Event + Response = Outcome

The event was a blizzard and a power outage. I had zero control over the event. But I had total control over my response—and that would determine the outcome.

I could’ve stayed home, miserable, freezing, and complaining.

Or—I could make a decision.

So I made one. I booked a hotel. My kids got to swim. My son learned how to swim on his own and jump into a pool without help—something that would never have happened otherwise. We had heat, food, lights, and even free breakfast. We created memories.

And while I was in the hotel, something else happened: my keynote speaker banner got delivered. The one that says, “You Can Buy Time.”

It reminded me that another decision people often delay is the decision to delegate.

So many people think they’re out of time. They feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and stuck. But time isn’t the thief—we’re just not using it wisely.

You can buy time. You can outsource. You can say no. You can make a decision.

Every time you choose to dump or delegate, you buy back your time and energy.

So here’s my challenge to you:

✅ The next time something happens you can’t control—remember E + R = O.

✅ When you’re stuck in overwhelm—ask yourself, "Do I really need to do this? Can I dump it or delegate it?"

✅ And most of all—make a decision. Because everything you want is waiting on the other side of that one brave choice.

And hey, if you ever need someone to help you sort it all out? You know where to find the How to Make a Decision Lady. 😉

One more thing.

Just this Friday, I connected with a new co-author on social media. She was surprised by how much personal content I share.

To me, personal content is just as important as valuable, educational content—because it shows that I’m not just telling you what to do. I’m actually doing these things in my life, too. I’m living it. I’m walking through it with you.

So I’d love to know:

👉 Do you like seeing real personal transformation stories? 👉 Do they help you feel more connected or inspired?

Drop a comment and let me know. I’m all ears—and always happy to share the real stuff.

Kuddos to you for getting a hotel and letting the kids swim. I’m sure it was great to let them have an outlet that is different than being at home especially when it’s freezing cold. Glad you got your banner! Looks great!!
