How our Data Systems allow us to better serve our customers and colleagues

The Chief Data Office (CDO) is central to making things happen at Virgin Money.   

With the growth of artificial intelligence (AI), increasing regulator focus and working to improve customer experience, data is even more important than ever before. Transforming data into valuable and meaningful information allows us to better serve our customers and colleagues in an efficient, safe and compliant way. 

This information has and continues to be used across our Bank-wide teams to deliver:  

  • top-class customer experiences such as Redi – Virgin Money’s AI-powered Virtual Assistant 

  • personalised customer experiences  

  • colleague self-service 

  • insight to customer operations, contact centres and to resolve and prevent customer queries 

  • customer protection from fraud 

… all whilst enforcing data governance controls and regulatory compliance.  

Put simply – translating data into useable information is at the heart of what we do. Information is central to understanding our customers – what motivates them, what their needs are, and how to best support them.  

Our technology blueprint has to satisfy multiple dimensions. It needs to meet the compliance and security requirements a Bank must have, taking into consideration the needs and requirements of our customers. This is why we’re investing heavily in our data capabilities!  

What technologies are we using? 

We have a significant cloud estate; embracing new data analytics capabilities (Python, R, PowerBI, Databricks and DataRobot); developing our modern data lakehouse capability; and building out our API’s to allow easy, consistent and timely access to our data products.  

Adopting products like Microsoft’s Power Platform gives frontline colleagues a better view of customers and allows them to offer more personal and tailored financial experiences. 

An important part of our role is handling the legacy technology whilst transitioning to the new. We’re not fully there yet, but that is part of the journey, and an exciting one. We have learned lessons and adapted, allowing us to scale our data platforms in a secure, low maintenance manner with a set of tools that accelerate our data delivery and time to value. As we aim to digitalise more across the Bank, we’ll continue to look at the latest opportunities to leverage cloud technology to improve customer service, supporting personalisation and drive growth. 

How do we work with our colleagues? 

Success is a team game. Information is only as good as the collaboration across the business, and this is at the heart of how we work.  

The central CDO capabilities are interlocked into each business area to understand the business and customer needs, translate it into a clear ask, and work together to drive iterative value. This helps our teams create deep understanding of critical insights, that when infused with the knowledge of the process and technology, creates a powerful and exciting capability that serves the whole business.

I started 'IT' in my early 20s , it was called 'Data Processing ' then , data is at the heart of IT , I am now in my 60s , get the Data right ' IT works regardless of 'front end'.
