How Plansee is shaping a sustainable future - Sustainability Report 2024

Plansee together with CERATIZIT, both parts of the Plansee Group, have just published the latest Group Sustainability Report. It is more than just a report: it’s a reflection of our shared vision, our progress, and our commitment to building a more sustainable future. 🧾🌱

Together we’ve built a group-wide sustainability strategy that’s measurable, and deeply rooted in our values. Whether it’s reducing emissions, expanding circular material flows, or empowering our people to grow - this report shows how we’re turning strategy into action across the Plansee Group .

Take a look at how we’re shaping the future of high-performance materials, responsibly, transparently, and with purpose.

♻️ Strong sustainability goals

As part of our group-wide decarbonization roadmap, Plansee has submitted near-term science-based targets to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for validation. These include:

  • A 75% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by fiscal year 2030 (compared to FY 2020).
  • A 25% reduction in Scope 3 upstream emissions by the same year.
  • In addition, we’ve set a voluntary long-term target to cut Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 90% by 2050.

These ambitious goals reflect our commitment to climate responsibility and align with the latest climate science to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Driving Sustainability Actions in our four key areas

Together with the Plansee Group, Plansee and CERATIZIT have defined four key areas for action: reducing carbon emissions, enhancing circularity, managing suppliers and further developing the company as an attractive employer. These four areas of action are reflected in the focus areas Products, Production, Procurement, and People, and are complemented by the cross-cutting topic of Governance & Responsibility.

🛠️ Products & Production

As a partner in innovation, we integrate sustainability and circularity into all development projects, driving sustainable processes in the industries we supply.

Focusing on material & resource efficiency in production we concentrate on decarbonization in production technologies, shift to renewable resources, optimized processes and recycling of raw materials. Here some of our initiatives:

  • Through its refurbishment initiatives with different partners, Plansee takes efforts to saving resources and bringing down emissions. Our molybdenum circularity rate stands at 26%, our tungsten recycling rate reached 88%.
  • With such a big product portfolio, the question arises as to how the total emissions of the company can be allocated to a single product or a customer's order, for which the Product Carbon Footprint is calculated. The calculation includes the emissions from the raw material, the production and the transport up to the point where the product leaves the company (cradle-to-gate approach). Our customers can use this to calculate their own carbon footprint more precisely and fast.
  • With our innovation strengths we help our customers to develop more sustainable products and reach their sustainability goals. We develop new materials and solutions for clean energy, medical engineering, electronics, and e-mobility. We deliver solutions for sustainable applications, like solar or photovoltaics.

🛒 Procurement

We are committed to sustainable and responsible procurement practices. Alongside renewable electricity, hydrogen from electrolysis and responsibly sourced raw materials, we actively seek more sustainable sourcing options:

  • We are firmly committed to responsible procurement by ensuring that all materials, goods, and services are sourced from socially, ethically, and ecologically sustainable suppliers. These suppliers operate under strict procurement guidelines and long-term agreements built on mutual trust and a shared focus on sustainability.
  • A key achievement is that 100% of our 3TG materials – tungsten, tantalum, tin, and gold – are sourced exclusively from smelters certified by the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI).
  • In addition, we exercise rigorous due diligence in sourcing conflict minerals, adhering to international standards such as the OECD Guidelines, the EU Regulation 2017/821, and the U.S. Dodd-Frank Act.

To maintain high standards across the supply chain, within the Plansee Group we use tools like Assent and conducts regular audits to monitor environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria, while continuously improving supplier performance through structured feedback and risk assessments.
