How To Stay Employable & Scale Up In Your Career
Looking for a job is one thing but staying employed & employable is where your wit and wisdom is tested.
Always remember to offer value and to make an impact towards achieving the business objectives where you are employed.
Here are things to consider:
1. Exude Passion for your Job- passion is one thing that is hard to come by so when an employer spots it they treasure it.
2. Go The Extra Mile- the idea of always complaining that things are not in your "job description" could make you appear as though you are not up for a good challenge. People value those who are willing to go above and beyond to get the job done and ensure that the bottom line of the business is met.
3. Understanding Where the Gaps Exist- having the ability to spot gaps in the business is a quality of a visionary leader. It shows that you are futuristic and excited about where the business is headed.
One way to do this is to keenly understand the business, mission, vision and the bottom-line and to creatively think of ways to ensure that growth is a constant.
4. Getting Your Hands Dirty- often times people shy away from doing the unglamorous jobs as they don't offer that much luxury. Spotting the gaps that may exist and stepping in to help where needed is one way to ensure that the ball keeps running and that the job is done at the end of the day.
This requires one to be agile enough to adjust to the changing times.
5. Be Accountable- you need to be responsible for your job and to ensure that you are always in a position to give an account where required. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone and own up to your mistakes, shortcomings, and involvement in conflicts.
By being transparent and staying accountable, you're sending a message that a you're trustworthy and competent employee who can handle big responsibilities.
6. Upskill & Keep Learning- there is always something new to learn so ensure that you stay hungry, stay foolish. Constantly pursue knowledge and better ways to do your job so as to ensure that you have maximum efficiency.
7. "I don't know but I am willing to learn is an answer!" Unfortunately many people have been subjected to discrimination and backlash because of not having enough information about a particular topic such that it has caused them to become afraid of openly admitting that they are not fully conversant to some things. Be humble enough to know that you will never know everything and wise enough to ask for help when you need it.
8. Take Risks- life is too short not to take risks and explore you maximum potential. You have the brilliant mind to really be the best version of yourself, make sure that you are not selling yourself shot. Risks in the sense that you can jump onto emerging trends, merge into untouched territories and have enough data to explain your decisions and dreams so that they are scalable and feasible.
9. Have a Teachable spirit- be ready to learn from those who have gone ahead of you, ask questions confidently, enroll into online courses, ask for a mentor at your work place, but always remember that to whom much is given, much is expected so be ready to expel the same knowledge that you have gained to help other people.
10. Be Outspoken & Confident- the more that people see you or hear about you the more that you remain relevant. At times you could be having such great potential but nobody gets to know about it because you are too shy of getting out there.

4yThis is so brilliant. I especially love the point of admitting that you don't know something but always being ready to learn. That is the way to go!
