Hy Hy Hybrid 🎄

Hy Hy Hybrid 🎄

Hello everyone!

Stew here from Cento. As we wrap up another busy year in Building Services, I wanted to share some thoughts about what's coming in 2025, particularly around remote and hybrid working. After 15+ years in recruitment, I've seen plenty of changes, but the shift we're experiencing now is something else entirely.

The Changing Face of Building Services 🏢

Even in our traditionally hands-on sector, remote working isn't just a trend anymore - it's becoming business as usual. But here's the thing: it's not about going fully remote (let's face it, you can't fix an HVAC system from your living room!). It's about finding the right balance.

What I'm Seeing in the Market 👀

From my conversations with clients and candidates this month, here's what's really happening:

Technical Roles Are Evolving:

  • Design engineers working effectively from home offices
  • Project managers splitting time between site and home
  • BMS specialists handling diagnostics remotely
  • Service managers coordinating teams virtually

But Some Things Haven't Changed:

  • Engineers still need to be on-site for installations and maintenance
  • Emergency response teams remain location-dependent
  • Some client meetings still work better face-to-face

Making Remote Work Actually Work 💻

Here's what the most successful companies in our sector are doing:

  1. Being Crystal Clear About Expectations Transparent about which roles can be remote and which can't Clear guidelines about on-site requirements Realistic about client facing responsibilities
  2. Getting the Tech Right Investing in proper remote access systems Mobile solutions for field teams Simple but effective communication tools
  3. Managing Mixed Teams Regular check-ins that actually mean something Balanced approach to team meetings Fair treatment for both office and remote staff

The Seasonal Challenge ❄️

As we head into the Christmas period, remote working brings some unique challenges:

  • Managing emergency callouts with skeleton crews
  • Coordinating holiday cover across distributed teams
  • Keeping remote workers engaged during quiet periods
  • Planning for the January rush

Looking Ahead to 2025 🔮

From where I'm sitting, companies that'll thrive in 2025 are those who:

  • Embrace flexibility without compromising service
  • Invest in the right technology (not just the newest)
  • Build strong remote cultures that actually work
  • Keep their on-site teams feeling just as valued

Quick Tips for Success 💡

  1. Review your remote working policies before the new year
  2. Update your tech stack - but keep it simple and effective
  3. Think about how you'll handle career progression for remote staff
  4. Consider hybrid solutions for traditionally on-site roles
  5. Don't forget about the social aspect - especially during the festive season!

Seasonal Wisdom 🎅

Remember, December is a great time to:

  • Review your remote working policies
  • Plan your 2025 hybrid working strategy
  • Think about team engagement for the new year
  • Consider how you'll attract remote talent in 2025
