Imperfect Communication: Intention & Mindset

Imperfect Communication: Intention & Mindset

We’re diving into a topic that lies at the heart of every thriving business: communication.

This journey has been filled with insights, and throughout our discussions, we’ve explored invaluable ideas that help you navigate the complexities of business. But what happens after these conversations? The key takeaways don’t disappear—they evolve into actionable strategies that can transform the way you communicate and lead.

The Power of Communication in Business

Over my 30 years in business—working for others, running my own ventures, and coaching business owners, executives, and emerging leaders—I’ve discovered that communication is the constant thread that ties everything together. No matter the industry, the role, or the challenge at hand, effective communication determines success.

This realization led me to develop the Imperfectly Perfect Framework, a nine-step process designed to foster conscious communication. The word "imperfect" is intentional—it acknowledges that growth comes from embracing mistakes and learning from them.

This framework encourages us to:

  • Understand our own communication preferences.
  • Recognize and adapt to others’ styles.
  • Engage authentically while practicing empathy and active listening.

We often hear phrases like "be yourself" and "be authentic," but what does that truly mean? It starts with self-awareness, which empowers us to become better listeners, empathetic leaders, and more effective communicators.

Why Communication Matters

Communication affects everything—from team morale to customer retention. Miscommunication breeds mistrust, while clear and intentional dialogue fosters connection and collaboration.

Rather than summarizing everything we’ve discussed, I want to highlight two foundational elements of the Imperfectly Perfect Framework: Intention and Mindset.

Intention: The Foundation of Meaningful Communication

Have you ever paused to consider why you’re having a particular conversation? Not just casual chats, but those discussions where time, effort, and resources are invested?

Setting an intention before a meeting or conversation changes the game. It provides clarity and direction. For example:

  • Are you seeking a solution?
  • Offering support?
  • Building rapport?

Intention isn’t about manipulation—it’s about clarity. When your purpose is clear, others are more likely to align with your vision.

Let me share a personal story. A few years ago, I had a misunderstanding with a close friend. My usual reaction would have been defensiveness, but this time, I approached the conversation differently. My intention was to understand their perspective rather than prove my point. This simple shift transformed the discussion, strengthening our bond and resolving the issue.

Mindset: Shaping How We Respond

Your mindset influences how you perceive and navigate communication challenges. A growth mindset turns obstacles into opportunities, while a fixed mindset creates unnecessary barriers.

Consider this: if you approach a difficult conversation with curiosity and openness, you’re more likely to uncover solutions. On the other hand, a negative mindset can escalate conflicts and hinder progress.

I’ve witnessed the transformative power of a growth mindset in countless individuals. It fosters resilience and adaptability, enabling them to navigate even the toughest conversations.

If you find yourself stuck in negativity, try reframing your thoughts. For instance:

  • Instead of “This can’t be done,” ask, “What haven’t we considered that could make this possible?”

Key Takeaways

  • Intention drives purpose. Be clear about what you want to achieve in your conversations, and your communication will naturally align with your objectives.
  • Mindset shapes outcomes. Cultivate a growth-oriented mindset. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and connect.

Improving communication isn’t just about external outcomes; it’s about fostering a culture of belonging and trust within your team. When communication is intentional and rooted in empathy, it creates an environment where people feel valued and heard.

As my mentor once taught me, we’re in business for three reasons: to find clients, keep clients, and nurture clients. Without them, we have no business. This principle applies internally as well—nurture your team, and your business will thrive.

Imperfect communication isn’t a flaw; it’s an opportunity for growth. Embrace it, learn from it, and watch how it transforms your relationships and results.

Imperfectly perfect communication is not about getting it right every time, but about being intentional, adaptable, and open to growth in every interaction.
