InConexus addressing international initiatives for sustainability
To address current climate challenges, various actions are being undertaken by international organizations and private companies. From a State-centered viewpoint, this is important, as a multilateral dynamic to fight against damages made by humans to the environment for commercial purposes. The European Union Deforestation Regulation is an example of how international needs and multilateralism can lead to legal measures that address pressing environmental issues.
EU member states see themselves as major consumers of products that have contributed to deforestation, prompting them to push for a plan to address the issue (European Commission, 2024). The EUDR aims to prevent deforestation, reduce carbon emissions, and avoid forest degradation caused by agricultural expansion. This is implemented through a due diligence process required of companies seeking access to the EU market. InConexus aligns with these international initiatives, as they involve not only states but also private companies.

Since due diligence must include geographical information, InConexus has developed an internal administrative system to collect georeferenced and geolocation data from coffee growers' farms. The information is compiled and subsequently assessed through a risk evaluation conducted by InConexus' Territorial Approach Team. This evaluation considers factors such as contamination risks, proper land use, labor rights, protection of third parties, environmental preservation, human rights, taxation, anti-corruption measures, and commercial and customs compliance.
Compliance with these factors is documented in the due diligence report, ensuring effective alignment with the Regulation. It is also important to note that InConexus does not operate in areas affected by deforestation, as it works exclusively within agricultural lands defined by the EUDR's scope (European Commission, 2024). During the data collection process, key national institutions play a crucial role in compiling and providing information on farm status, traceability, and the socio-environmental context of coffee growers. These include the Colombian Information System for Rural Agricultural Planning (SIPRA), the Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA), the National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC), and the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, Environmental Studies (IDEAM), and Sourcemap. To date, approximately 2,635 farms have been covered.

As Colombia is a standard risk country according to the benchmarking of the European Commission, it requires a simple due diligence, generally speaking. In this context, due diligence must ensure deforestation-free production plots, compliance with national legislation, and the inclusion of precise coordinates for each plot (European Commission, 2025). InConexus is therefore focused on meeting the requirements outlined in Article 3(a) and (b) of the EUDR (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115), addressing national legislation and deforestation-free. As a consequence, particular attention is given to ensuring full traceability, preventing smuggling, maintaining fiscal compliance, upholding social, cultural, and economic rights, and avoiding any adulteration of origin.
In conclusion, the EUDR is a legal mechanism arising from a European multilateral initiative aimed at regulating and verifying the entry of deforestation-free products into the European market. Due diligence must be conducted to comply with these regulations, which include the collection of geographical information and the assessment of risks associated with production plots. InConexus is committed to promoting sustainable practices. For that purpose, it aligns with international regulations through collaboration with public institutions, international partnership, internal self-assessment, and continuous interaction with coffee producers, ensuring effective compliance as reflected in its due diligence processes.
