India interlinking the SDGs through electricity access

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

• India’s success in rapidly increasing access to electricity for the poor, shows that access to electricity (SDG 7) also enables many services that contribute to achieving other SDGs.
• Access to electricity has supported progress towards SDG 3 (Health and wellbeing); SDG 5 (Gender equality); SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation); SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth); and SDG 13 (Climate action).
• These examples suggest that that an integrated approach to the SDGs should place last-mile electricity access and SDG 7 at the heart of the race to end poverty and ensure a sustainable future.
