Inside the Clean Zone: The Demands of Healthcare M&E
Beyond Compliance: Delivering M&E in Critical Clinical Environments
Healthcare M&E delivery is defined by precision, regulation, and unforgiving operational constraints. Whether supporting an oncology cleanroom or upgrading a cardiac catheterisation lab, the technical demands exceed standard construction tolerances. Systems must integrate with live clinical infrastructure, maintain critical services, and support infection control protocols—without disruption.
This isn’t about meeting specification. It’s about executing within environments where every deviation carries clinical risk.
Tolerances, Testing, and Technical Accountability
HVAC zoning, pressure regimes, air change rates and environmental controls must be engineered to suit the functional intent of each clinical space. From positive pressure isolation to temperature and humidity stability, systems must be tested, balanced, and commissioned in line with HTM, HBN and relevant infection prevention guidance.
Ductwork is installed to healthcare-grade standards with sealed joints and antimicrobial finishes where specified. Water services require robust backflow prevention and thermal disinfection strategies. All plant, valves and controls are selected for reliability and maintainability within live clinical estates.
Live Site Execution in Acute Settings
These projects are not built in isolation. Works are delivered in operational hospitals with patients on wards, staff under pressure, and no appetite for disruption. M&E delivery is sequenced, phased, and coordinated with clinical teams. Service shutdowns are planned down to the hour. All trades work under hospital permit systems and infection control oversight.
The Mater Hospital, Dublin
ClearSphere partnered with Tritech to deliver the full mechanical fit-out of a cleanroom suite to support the START oncology research unit. This included the rooftop air handling plant, chilled water and LPHW systems, specialist ventilation, and integration with BMS - all delivered within a fully operational acute hospital. The works involved complex cranage, coordination with live clinical services, and rigorous infection control protocols. Every element was sequenced around patient care and executed under strict compliance with healthcare engineering standards.
St James’s Hospital – Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory
This high-spec fit-out included new HVAC, CHW, LPHW, BMS and medical gases for a cardiac cath lab in one of Ireland’s busiest hospitals. All works were delivered while the facility remained operational. The project required stringent infection control measures, precise environmental control, and integration with existing infrastructure—all under tight time constraints.
St Mary’s Hospital: Phased M&E Upgrades in a Live Clinical Environment
Tritech acted as main contractor, delivering a full turnkey renovation and modernisation of both the main hospital and annex buildings. The works included major mechanical upgrades - air handling plant, chilled water, LPHW and domestic water systems - alongside structural, architectural and fire safety enhancements.
This was a complex, multi-disciplinary project delivered in a fully operational healthcare facility. Live wards and active service corridors required meticulous phasing, continuous coordination with HSE estates, and rigorous infection control measures. A key focus of the project was compliance with current fire and building regulations, ensuring that the hospital met modern standards for safety and functionality.
Tritech’s role extended beyond M&E installation to full project management, compliance oversight and the integration of all systems within a regulated, clinical environment.
