Inside the EduFeArn Coding Academy - Building Future Entrepreneurs
Welcome to EduFeArn Education Insights!
Last episode, we explored the exciting rollout of the new Coding & Robotics curriculum for Grades R-9, laying essential groundwork for digital literacy. Today, we're looking further ahead - at how we equip our high school learners and school-leavers with the advanced skills needed to thrive in the digital economy and tackle the pressing challenge of youth unemployment: a deep dive into the EduFeArn Coding Academy.
The Stark Reality: Youth Unemployment in South Africa
As our CEO, Gareth Fearnley, often highlights, South Africa faces a significant challenge: approximately 400,000 youth enter the job market each quarter, while only around 21,000 new jobs are created. This growing bottleneck demands innovative solutions that empower young people to not just seek employment, but to create it.
The EduFeArn Coding Academy was born from this need - a passion to address socio-economic problems by creating tangible pathways to job creation and entrepreneurship for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Why C# and Unity? Skills for the Future, Today.
Our Coding Academy focuses on training learners in C# and Unity development. Why these specific technologies?
C#: A powerful, versatile, and widely-used programming language developed by Microsoft, essential for building robust applications, web services, and is a cornerstone of game development with Unity.
Unity: The world's leading platform for creating interactive, real-time 2D and 3D content. It's the engine behind a huge percentage of mobile games, PC games, console games, as well as applications in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), architecture, film, automotive, and more.
By mastering C# and Unity, learners gain access to a vast and rapidly expanding global industry. As Gareth mentions, at EduFeArn, "we make education fun... we go into Unity, we create some animations, we create learning, we create augmented reality... we are now creating AR content which brings a textbook to life."
These are the exciting applications our Coding Academy students learn to build.
More Than Just Coding: An Incubator for Entrepreneurs
The EduFeArn Coding Academy is designed as a job creation and skills development incubator:
Practical Skills: We train high school learners and school-leavers to a level where they have the skills required to start generating an income.
Earning Potential (Local & Global): Our vision is to create a space where students can learn, get passionate about coding, and then transition into our incubator. From there, they can:
A Supportive Environment: The incubator provides a place to work, collaborate, and continue honing their skills.
This isn't just about learning to code; it's about fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and providing the tools and environment for young South Africans to become creators and innovators in the digital age.
