"Islands of excellence - the revelation that was Mukthigram "

"Islands of excellence - the revelation that was Mukthigram "

My recent visit to the Sundarbans villages was deeply moving, as I witnessed the indomitable spirit of communities rebuilding their lives after Cyclone Aila in 2009. Organised by the Mukti Foundation, this two-day trip introduced me to MuktiGram, a collective of villages that have turned despair into hope. Over 1,500 families now thrive here, their livelihoods restored through resilience and the unwavering support of the Mukti Foundation.

The Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, has weathered countless cyclones and floods over the years. Yet, what I witnessed there was nothing short of inspiring- an extraordinary resolve to rebuild, time and again. The village elders, deeply connected to their land, lead with unwavering strength and unity. They set aside political differences to focus on what truly matters: the survival and well-being of their people. The Mukti Foundation’s support has nurtured this remarkable internal leadership, showing that true progress is born from the heart of the community.

Walking along the embankments, I felt their profound importance. These barriers guard against tidal surges and symbolise resilience. Mangroves protect the land from erosion, while dragon fruit and coconut trees along the edges provide life and income. Each tree and blade of vetiver grass whispers hope, anchoring not just the soil but the future of these families.

MuktiGram’s eco-friendly practices demonstrate that progress and preservation go hand in hand. Gas connections reduce the need for firewood, protecting forests and easing the community’s burden. Here, self-reliance thrives, with women at the heart of it all, exchanging their labour for coupons at the community store- an act that deeply strengthens both individual and collective spirit.

Education, once a distant dream, is now accessible. Children no longer travel long distances for school, and battery-operated three-wheelers keep the villages connected. Self-Help Groups unite women, enabling them to earn while preserving the traditions that have sustained their families for generations.

What truly moved me was seeing how MuktiGram has embraced living in harmony with nature. Organic farming and sustainable fishing aren’t just practices- they are lifelines. In the heart of this village, where life was once uprooted, there is now growth, balance, and a sense of peace. Medical care is available, and tsunami-resistant cottages provide families with shelter and safety. The no-alcohol policy within a 12 km radius ensures that the people’s health and dignity are protected, preserving the soul of this community.

Every corner of MuktiGram speaks of transformation, not just in livelihoods but in the hearts, making it what I would call as “islands of excellence”. This land, once ravaged by disaster, is now a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of community, and the relentless efforts of the Mukti Foundation. It was a personal reminder to me of the strength that lies within all of us to rebuild, to adapt, and to flourish- no matter how many storms we face and a dream to have many such “islands of excellence” across India!
