A Lament for the Decline of the Green Party: Collaboration Must Drive Climate Action
The recent general election brought significant changes to Ireland’s political landscape, not least of which was the near total collapse of the Green Party’s representation. While Fuels for Ireland and the Greens have often been perceived as having differing perspectives, the prospect of losing their relentless focus on climate and environmental issues in the Oireachtas is a loss for everyone committed to arresting the climate emergency.
At Fuels for Ireland, our objectives and strategy are closely aligned with the broader goals championed by the Greens: addressing the climate emergency and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Where we have differed is in the tactics and policies that will deliver those outcomes. While the Green Party pursued certain approaches that we believe overlooked the potential of advanced, synthetic, and biofuels, we cannot deny the value of their unwavering commitment to climate action.
The Need for Pragmatism and Collaboration
As Ireland transitions to a new government, we see an opportunity for a more open-minded and pragmatic approach to climate action—one that embraces all solutions available, including low-carbon liquid fuels. Fuels for Ireland welcomes the commitments from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to support low-carbon liquid fuels in their manifestos. We hope to see these commitments included in the Programme for Government and pledge our full cooperation in helping deliver this critical aspect of Ireland’s net-zero strategy.
Advanced fuels, including synthetic and biofuels, represent a practical and immediate solution for reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors. These fuels can complement electrification and other emerging technologies while offering a realistic pathway to decarbonise transport and industry in the short and medium term. It is imperative that the new government approaches Ireland’s climate strategy with an open mind, recognising the value of all technologies in reducing emissions.
Balancing Climate Action and Affordability
Another critical area that requires attention is the role of fuel in the cost of living. While the Green Party maintained a sharp and relentless focus on climate policy, the impact of those policies on ordinary citizens was sometimes underexplored. As we transition to a sustainable economy, it is essential to balance environmental objectives with affordability and fairness.
This is why Fuels for Ireland continues to advocate for the establishment of an expert group on fuel taxation. A well-structured taxation framework can ensure Ireland’s climate policies are both effective and equitable, addressing the cost of living while incentivising cleaner energy solutions.
Lessons from the Greens
While the Greens' narrative sometimes included unpopular policies, their dedication to keeping climate at the forefront of national discourse was undeniable. One area, however, where improvement was needed was in engagement. Constructive dialogue and collaboration are essential to achieving Ireland’s climate goals.
Fuels for Ireland strives to be a constructive force in this conversation. We respect the legislative process and remain committed to working with all political parties, industry stakeholders, and the broader public to achieve shared climate objectives.
Looking Ahead
The election results should serve as a reminder that successful climate action requires both determination and collaboration. As the new government forms, Fuels for Ireland stands ready to facilitate progress by promoting innovative, low-carbon solutions and ensuring a pragmatic approach to climate policy.
While the Greens’ near-demise is regrettable, the momentum for climate action must not falter. Together, through open-minded and inclusive strategies, we can drive the sustainable transformation Ireland needs.

9moWhat about all the children that are missing. One poor mother had to go to hospital from an IPAS centre when she returned her children were gone. Why is this not important ? Why is Roderick O Gorman not making this and all the missing children a priority? I find it heartbreaking.

9moLess of the partisan political attacks on this platform please.........especially from a major fossil fuel consumer, its too obvious. We are in a Climate Crisis and petty attacks are distracting. Before taking a stand every business leader should look close to home first and be able to demonstrate the actions you have implemented within your business to minimise your carbon footprint as much as possible - publish your Scope 1 & 2 emissions and show what actions you will taker to deliver on our 2030 commitments. When this information is public, take your stand

9moYes, but there’s ways of doing, ways of getting the population on your side, ways of encouraging, persuading and enticing people and then there was taxing , punishing and upsetting people. Two totally different ways of moving forward and the latter got them booted out for at least the next two elections. #thepeopledecided #rightway #wrongway #enjoythepension
