Management of Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy with Retinal Detachment in a Pregnant Patient with Type 2 Diabetes

2. Patient Background

A 39-year-old female patient with a medical history of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and high blood pressure.

3. Whereabouts

The patient first visited our facility on 18/07/2024 for follow-up and further management.

4. Clinical Presentation

At 8 months pregnant, the patient sought additional care after having undergone retinal surgery on her right eye in 2023.

5. Diagnosis & Challenges

The diagnosis revealed:

  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR)

  • Traction retinal detachment not involving the macula in the right eye

  • Combined forms of age-related cataract in both eyes

Managing this condition was further complicated by the patient’s pregnancy and systemic health issues.

6. Treatment & Outcome

The following procedures were successfully performed on the right eye on 17/12/2024:

  • Phacoemulsification + IOL

  • ROSO

  • 23G (PPV)

  • Delamination/Segmentation

  • Endolaser

  • 5000 SO

The patient’s vision is currently stabilizing, with ongoing monitoring.
