Lead with Heart, Not Just Data: The EQ Shift in Leadership

Let’s face it—being the smartest person in the room isn’t enough anymore. AI can out-analyze your spreadsheets and half-write your emails, but it can’t read a room, inspire a team, or say, “I’ve been there.” That’s the true superpower: Emotional Intelligence (EQ).

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage your feelings for the purpose of reducing stress, communicating effectively with others, empathizing with them, and overcoming challenges.

If you’re an emerging leader, now’s the time to double down on what robots can’t steal: your humanity. Here are three practical, doable ways to boost your EQ today:

1. Reflect Daily-  Like a Boss Spend 5 minutes each evening asking:

  • What emotions did I ride today?
  • How did they influence my decisions?
  • What triggered me?

Pro tip: Self-awareness is the cornerstone of EQ

2. Listen Like You Mean It Next time you converse, pretend you're hosting a podcast—no interruptions, full focus. Then, summarize what you heard. (Yes, even when you’re dying to jump in)

3. Walk in Their Shoes When conversations get tough, ask:

  • What’s really going on behind the scenes?
  • How would I feel if I were in their shoes?

Get curious and talk to people outside your echo chamber. Growth loves discomfort.

Final thought: AI can scan data, but it can’t lead with heart, humor, or humility—i.e., the traits Patrick Lencioni calls “The Ideal Team Player”: Humble, Hungry, Smart (EQ).

Level up your EQ. Be the leader people want to follow. What’s one small move you’re making this week? Share below—I might just borrow it!

Couldn't agree more, Michael. Backstories and EQ are two things that make you distinctly different.
