Leader Teamship
We are familiar with the idea of team leadership, but I'd like to reflect on an alternative idea called "leader teamship". I have been fortunate and privileged to collaborate and contribute alongside other leaders in many diverse environments. These include military officer training, MBA study, SME businesses, parenthood(!), sports teams, coaching courses, O&G projects, TEDx and PhD student cohorts. In each of these environments I have been surrounded by incredibly capable and career-driven leaders, most of whom have inspired me to strive for excellence, however, in each case there was also a critical need for mutual support as we faced the unknown, together.
By definition, leaders should be somewhat self aware, but in my experience we still struggle to reach out for help. Vulnerability is the key to human connection yet leaders often wear a suit of armour to shield our true emotions. We know this of each other which is why it is essential that a deliberate effort is made to build camaraderie, break down walls, and be there for each other when the going gets tough. This is easier said than done. Leaders are programmed to be comfortable with being alone. Paradoxically, growth happens outside the comfort zone so teamship in a cohort of leaders involves checking in and sharing experience as an act of service to the leaders on our left and right. This encourages servant leadership which inspires the next generation in turn.
One of the longest and loneliest climbs I have ever completed was the yomp to a professional doctorate. When I was flagging, the biggest boost to morale was an unsolicited message from a fellow candidate who was also struggling up a distant slope, with the same doubts and demons, but with an indomitable will. That kinship is what steadied me, strengthened me, and steeled my resolve to keep going and conquer the hill. Leader teamship strengthens team leadership. Bear this in mind and check in with a fellow leader today.

1moLoved this perspective, and totally agree with it Sometimes we just need more from those who face the same obstacles. Those who stand just within our line and ride the same ship to the same destination. In that ship, it is really invaluable how far it can go, if we all acted as servants to the crew we belong🤝 Thank you for sharing, Dr Tim🌹 Would love to learn more from your journey!
