Legacy in Limbo: A Millennial’s View on Estate Planning in the Philippines
Why more Filipino families are losing wealth and how we can protect what our parents worked so hard for.
As a Millennial working in the financial industry, I’ve seen a surprising trend lately. Many families especially in the Philippines are facing unnecessary stress and conflict when a loved one passes away.
Why?
Because even after decades of building wealth, homes, land, businesses, investments, there was no clear estate plan.
I’ve witnessed families with strong relationships suddenly drift apart due to misunderstandings about inheritance. I’ve seen valuable assets stuck in legal limbo for years because the estate tax wasn’t prepared for. And sadly, I’ve seen wealth that took a lifetime to build slowly erode due to lack of planning.
It’s a reality that’s becoming even more relevant as many Baby Boomers and Gen X parents start passing their wealth to the next generation.
Why is this a growing challenge for us Millennials?
Because we’re the ones left to pick up the pieces.
💔 We’re the ones navigating estate taxes and paperwork we didn’t expect. 💔 We’re the ones mediating between siblings and relatives over inheritance disputes. 💔 We’re the ones dealing with government offices, banks, and the endless bureaucracy that could have been avoided.
And here’s what I realized:
Estate planning is not just about money. It’s about peace of mind—for the next generation.
So what exactly is estate planning?
It’s simply creating a clear plan for what happens to your assets, your home, business, investments, even your favorite heirlooms—when you’re gone.
In the Philippines, this is even more important because estate taxes must be settled before heirs can transfer titles or access assets. Without a plan, families can end up selling properties at a loss just to pay taxes.
How it preserves wealth (and family harmony)
✅ Protects young or unprepared heirs – Trusts can ensure the money is used wisely.
✅ Prevents conflicts – Clear instructions remove room for misunderstandings.
✅ Keeps the legacy alive – Your wealth doesn’t just get passed on, it’s preserved.
Why start now?
Because the longer you wait, the fewer options you have. Life is unpredictable, and the laws on estate taxes won’t wait for the “perfect time.”
Even a simple will is better than nothing. But with proper guidance, you can create a plan that truly protects your family and ensures your hard work lives on.
A personal note as a Millennial
I used to think estate planning was something only the ultra-rich needed. But after seeing ordinary families struggle with something that could have been avoided, I realized:
Estate planning is an act of love. It’s not about death—it’s about protecting life for the people you care about most.
If you’re a parent, this is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children. If you’re a Millennial like me, it’s time we have open conversations with our parents about it—before it’s too late.
Let’s keep your family’s legacy intact.

Because wealth isn’t just about what we build—it’s about what we preserve for the next generation. 💛
