Let's Cut Through The Resume or LinkedIn Voice Clutter & Make it Easy: 1 Story, 2 Conversations, Endless Opportunities. Your Personal Brand in Motion
No one knows and resonates with how hard it is to talk about yourself more than I do. You don’t want to come across like you think you’re the best thing since sliced bread, and yet you have to ‘sell’ yourself.
I get it.
No, really, I mean I get it too. I get anxious about talking about myself, too.
When I have to talk about myself, I have to shudder off those feelings of “am I saying the right thing, does this even make sense, did they want to go this deep or am I racing down a rabbit hole…”
It’s a continual vacillation between feeling like you’re bragging to feeling like a dork.
I tend to be team dork.
You know who is the absolute worst at this? Successful people! This is coming from nearly 15 years of career and performance coaching. People who lead, who make things happen, and who change the world are normally very, very bad at talking about themselves.
Really. Bad. And they are amazing people, just don't ask them to tell you that.
Almost everyone struggles with the same issue: bragging vs what do I say.
That’s why I rock at helping you find and express your professional voice. Because I’m not talking about me, I’m talking about you. I get to slip into your world. It's a very cool world.
Let's talk about you
If we haven’t worked together yet, here's a little nudge to help you until you set up a chat. I've given a link below to make it super easy.
Two conversations
I want you to imagine this: you’re meeting an acquaintance for coffee. Someone who knows you’re good at what you do or that you love it, but they don’t’ know enough to give details to someone else. They know you but aren’t in your inner circle.
You guys grab a beverage and do the random chit-chat. Then they ask you, “so what is it you really do? I can tell you enjoy it, I’m curious what it is and why you like it so much.”
How do you respond? Right now, jot it down. Don’t think, just capture your initial thoughts.
Good, we’ll come back to these.
After you tell them your story, they light up and tell you, “Wow, this is great. I know a company who might be needing some help with that and they are taking proposals to help them. Now, I can’t guarantee they will read your proposal, but could you put one together that I could submit for you?”
How would you structure that proposal? Wouldn’t you want to show the synergy between their need and your expertise?
How would you prove you’re the right consultant for the job? Show your achievements but give the backstory to drive home the point of you know what you’re doing, it’s not words on a page?
What little extras would you throw in there? Would you research the company to see if they have a connection to one of your favorite community causes? Maybe put that you’ve volunteered with them in your proposal to help continue to build a connection. Even throw in a few keywords or phrases that hit home what they need.
One Story
Between the coffee shop conversation and proposal, you’ve told the same story. That is your professional brand.
The coffee shop is LinkedIn, more specifically your About section.
The proposal is your resume.
When you think of talking about what you do like a chat or proposal, you will spark interest with the right audience.
Not everyone. Not every time. But the right audience at the right time.
And by the way, what you do is to add value to someone or something somewhere all the time.
Conclusion
Stop putting so much pressure on yourself to talk “resume” or “LinkedIn”. Just talk you.
And, yes, I know, that is even harder sometimes…. almost all the time.
If that’s the case for you, let’s talk. Let's make it easy for you to talk about yourself, make it fun, and get you the results you want.
