Make Room
We serve a big God but He will only be as big as you allow Him to be in your life.
I thought I knew what God was about; I thought He was safe. When I thought of Him, I thought of a friend that I could count on to take care of me in my time of need. Sure, I read of the miracles performed in the Bible but since I hadn't had the "deliverance from lions" or "parting the red sea" experience in my life, I wasn't quite sure if miracles to that extent, could happen for me.
So, I limited God to this, nice, loving, caring God who is patient and keeps my family and I clothed and our bills paid. I thought that was the scope of how God would work in my life.
I was wrong.
God isn't safe, God isn't meek, and God doesn't have any limits.
I got stuck in limiting God to what I thought He was capable of. I placed Him in a cute little box, confined by my beliefs and limitations. That is where I notice many others get stuck as well; they think they know what God can do and cannot do in their lives but the truth is, they have no idea.
If there is anything that I've learned throughout my journey, it's that the more I let go of control, the more I am able to see how powerful God truly is.
Notice that I said, "Let go."
When we move out of the way and allow room for God to work in our lives, that is when He shows up and shows out.
Think of it in this manner, if I had a blank canvas and hired an artist to paint a picture, he would have full range to create a masterpiece. I am pretty sure that whatever he painted would be far more than I could ever imagine. However, if the canvas was filled with my drawings and I asked the artist to do the same as before, he would be limited to beautifying what I already created or would be forced to work around my design. Though it may still turn out nice, it most likely would not be to the magnitude it would have been, had I moved out of the way and allowed the artist to do his thing.
This is exactly how it is with God. He is the artist and our lives have the potential to be a masterpiece...if only we move out of the way.
So often, we limit ourselves to our own personal confines of what we believe we can and cannot do and try to place those same limitations on God. We are afraid to step out, pursue our calling, start that new business, move to a new state, quit our job, or whatever we feel God is calling us to do, based upon our own limits. In doing so, we neglect to realize that if we let go of our fears, doubts, and the urge to control and replaced them with faith, we would be able to see God perform those same biblical miracles in our own lives.
Now unto Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we could ask or think, according to the power at work within us.
- Ephesians 3:20
Most likely, you have heard the first part of that verse but what about the second part? Yes, God can do amazing things in your life, far more than you could ever imagine but the proportion in which He does so will be limited to what you allow Him to do and believe that He can do.
Big miracles require big faith.
Another verse that speaks to this point is Matthew 9:29.
According to your faith let it be done to you.
The size of your faith is the measuring stick in which you will see the power of God's work in your life. God is not you and your strengths and weaknesses are not His. There is a reason why the Bible states, "With God, all things are possible." It is because they are. However, they will only be possible if you believe that they are and take action that reflects just that.
Family, when God leads you in a direction or prompts you to do something, there is one thing that you can be sure of... you cannot lose! When you step out into the unknown, rest in His promises and truly believe that God has you covered.
God asks us to do hard, uncomfortable, and scary things because He wants us to rely on His strength rather than our own. He wants to show us His power and all that He is capable of. However, the reality is, if we keep Him confined to our box of limitations, we will never see it.
So, let go, believe big, and allow the Artist to make a masterpiece of your life. I promise that you will be amazed by the results.
