Mastering Personal Goal Setting

Mastering Personal Goal Setting

As we approach the end of the calendar year, reflections on goal setting for the upcoming year naturally spring to mind.

Episode 75 of our podcast delves into the intricacies of personal goal setting, sharing valuable insights and practical tips for a structured approach. In this blog post, we’ll explore the key highlights from the episode, providing you with a roadmap to set and achieve meaningful personal goals.

Assessment with the Wheel of Life

The goal-setting journey needs to start with a structured process. One highly effective tool is the “Wheel of Life,” an assessment tool (which can be found easily using your search engine of choice) and covers eight critical areas of your life: career, finances, personal growth, health, family relationships, social life, and attitude. By scoring your satisfaction in each area on a scale of 1 to 10, you gain clarity on which aspects need attention. This introspective process might reveal surprising priorities, guiding you towards a more holistic approach to goal setting.

Identifying Key Areas for Improvements;

Once you’ve assessed each life category, focus on the areas that matter most to you. Consider the gaps between your current scores and your desired scores. This exercise enables you to pinpoint specific aspects that require attention and improvement. For example, you may realize that enhancing your social life is more crucial than initially thought, shedding light on areas you may not have prioritised.

SMART and SPIRIT Goal Setting

There are two main goal-setting methodologies: SMART and SPIRIT. While SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, SPIRIT adds a more personal touch. SPIRIT stands for Specific, Prize, Individual, Revealing, Inspiring, and Time-bound.

  1. Specific: Clearly define your goals, making them specific and measurable.

  1. Prize: Reward yourself at different milestones to stay motivated, especially for long-term goals.

  1. Individual: Tailor your actions to your personality and preferences, making the journey more meaningful.

  1. Revealing: Regularly assess and adjust your goals to ensure they align with your evolving priorities.

  1. Inspiring: Infuse positivity and fun into your goals to maintain enthusiasm throughout the journey.

  1. Time-bound: Establish clear deadlines, ensuring a sense of urgency and focus.

Applying SPIRIT to Personal Goals;

Using SPIRIT, you can approach personal goals with a deeper understanding. For instance, if boosting your social life is a specific goal, consider individualised actions such as saying yes to invitations, initiating events, or starting a regular gathering. By infusing inspiration and positivity, the journey becomes more enjoyable and impactful.

Aligning Personal and Business Goals

For business owners and leaders particularly, there is an interconnectedness between personal and business goals. By honing personal goal-setting skills, you can enhance your ability to set and achieve business goals.

Great article Karen Kirton! Thanks for sharing. To enable the achievement of major goals, sometimes a 1, 5 or even 10 years away, I've found that utilising a 90-day high-perfomnace plan creates clarity in relation the actions required every day to stay on track.
