A Mental Model: Where to apply AI within an Individual Contributor's Job?

I have given nearly 100 Speeches, Keynotes, and Talks about AI over the past 3 years since the beginning of the Great commoditization of AI; for more on that check out one of my many Keynotes on YouTube. I could not be any more thrilled that over the past 5 years the level of Digital and Technology sophistication within our industry has skyrocketed. Full of pride in our industry (and the tiny role I played in this new level of knowledge) and with a desire to do less talking and more learning from these audiences, last fall, I created a new type of experience that I call the AI Dialogue.

The AI Dialogue, inspired by the format of a YPO Presentation, is a structured conversation where participants have the opportunity to share their experiences and learnings and to benefit from the experience and learnings of the collective in a private, confidential, open, and vulnerable space. I am so grateful to all the CEOs, owners, leaders, and front-line professionals who have engaged and shared their wisdom with me and with our industry community.

The AI Dialogue consists of 4 Key Steps...

Gilad Berensteins AI Dialogue Experience Overview

I will publish more of what I have learned from these sessions over the next few weeks.

During these conversations, and in many of my talks, I encourage leaders to identify and codify Mental Models that they can use as a guide to easily identify opportunities to deploy AI within a business based on the brand, market, strengths, and other realities of that specific company. In the coming weeks, I will share a handful of Mental Models that I created and tested that can be utilized by hotels, travel agencies, OTAs, and others when considering where to deploy AI.

Today, I want to share a mental model that seemed to really resonate with many of the individual contributors and top-performing frontline employees with whom I was fortunate to engage during the Dialogue. And frankly, I think it's probably universally applicable for any type of professional.

It's really quite simple...

Gilad Berensteins Mental model for where to apply AI

How to apply and easily utilize this Mental Model:

  1. Draw this 4-quadrant chart (or have AI do it for you).
  2. List all the key elements, tasks, and responsibilities of your role.
  3. Categorize that list into the 4 quadrants: things I love and am good at, things I love and am bad at, things I am good at and dislike, and things I am bad at and dislike.

And that's it!

Begin by focusing your AI and automation efforts on the bottom left quadrant, things you are both bad at and dislike, and completely leave alone the top right quadrant of the things you both enjoy doing and are good at.

A mental model we can all get behind!!

As I tell people all the time, in 3 years, your job should be both more productive and more enjoyable!!
