Meta’s Hundred Million Dollar Hiring Spree Ends in Departures
Meta’s launch of its Superintelligence Labs (MSL) was one of the most aggressive talent plays in recent memory, with Mark Zuckerberg reportedly dangling compensation packages worth more than $100 million a year to lure leading AI researchers. Yet just months in, the project has been marked by churn rather than stability. At least eight senior researchers, engineers, and product leaders have left or declined to stay on including Avi Verma, Ethan Knight, and Rishabh Agarwal with many returning to OpenAI or joining new ventures like Periodic Labs. Others, such as longtime Meta executive Chaya Nayak and PyTorch co-creator Bert Maher, departed for rival labs OpenAI and Anthropic. Departures have highlighted frustrations with Meta’s rapid reorganizations, including four restructures in six months and a shift away from “Behemoth,” its frontier model effort, toward more product-driven execution. Even as Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis called Meta’s hiring spree “rational,” OpenAI’s Sam Altman dismissed the strategy as hollow, stressing that “missionaries will beat mercenaries.”

Employees are pasting company secrets into ChatGPT and Cloudflare wants to stop it. Its new Cloudflare One update promises “X-ray vision” into shadow AI at work, tracking which tools employees use, what prompts they submit, and blocking sensitive uploads before they leave the network. The company frames it as a solution to an urgent compliance threat: confidential code, financial data, or strategy documents leaking into models beyond corporate control. CEO Matthew Prince has cast Cloudflare to enforce AI safety at scale, but the rollout has divided opinion. Early complaints of buggy analytics and heavy-handed oversight fuel skepticism over whether a network provider should be in the business of policing employee behavior and whether “shadow AI” is a problem that technology alone can solve.
