IT Modernization: Two Keys to Unlocking the Future Possibilities
The Federal CIO's IT Operating Plan issued in June 2022 states, “technical talent is essential to accomplish the mission and fundamental duties of the government.” As technology is deeply intertwined with almost every aspect of modern government operations and agencies continuously update their systems, it’s crucial that personnel are trained accordingly to maintain workflow, security levels and procurement practices. Also essential are taking advantage of unique funding opportunities and collaboration between the public and private sector—these are two additional keys to best position agencies for modernization.
Agencies can take advantage of the strategic funding initiatives offered by the OMB and GSA, including the Technology Modernization Fund and the Federal Citizen Service Fund. These two funds provide agencies with the resources needed to acquire and maintain tools and solutions that allow them to remain agile as future advancements come around. This funding also provides public sector the opportunity to work with the private sector to innovate new ideas and create streamlined protocols for agencies and their personnel. Continuing to create these funding opportunities will remain crucial.
Collaboration between the private and public sector is another central component of IT modernization as new technologies are developed and made available on the market. As these technologies quickly evolve, it’s necessary for industry to provide the tools to successfully implement them into their practices. This may include employee trainings on how the technology works within their networks or offering equipped personnel to come alongside employees during the adjustment period to support any mishaps or answer questions.
Successful collaboration requires solutions to be seen all the way through from development to successful everyday use. Working in partnership can enhance government technical talent, as private sector brings a wealth of resources and investment in technical research and development that’s not possible for agencies on limited budgets.
By harnessing the power of digital transformation through various funding initiatives and partnerships, agencies can radically improve everyday processes, leading to better customer service for citizens and creating an overall progressive tech environment.
