The Myth of “One Right Way”
This week, I’ve been thinking a lot about myths. Not fairy tales, but the cultural myths we carry into our work and our lives.
👉 The myth that “9 to 5” is the only “proper” way to work.
👉 The myth that neurodivergent people should be coached into being more “neurotypical.”
👉 The myth that everyone needs the same kind of self-help book, the same productivity system, or the exact motivational quote taped above their desk.
Here’s the truth: there is no single “right way.”
When I coach neurodivergent business owners, the work is rarely about pushing them into pre-packaged solutions. It’s about:
✨ Understanding what’s going on with executive function (why getting started, planning, or finishing things can feel so hard).
✨ Making peace with the past, because carrying unspoken feelings is exhausting, and you can’t build the future while still weighed down by yesterday.
✨ Designing work that fits their energy, their rhythms, and their goals — not someone else’s rulebook.
And sometimes it’s as simple as giving someone permission to rest when they’re tired, instead of endlessly apologising for not fitting the mould.
The world is full of voices telling us what we “should” do. You’re too sensitive. You talk too much. You’re not productive enough. You’re not doing Christmas properly because you didn’t get socks. (Well, maybe not that last one — but you get the point.)
Coaching, at its best, isn’t about reinforcing those myths. It’s about unpicking them. Looking at the story you’ve been handed, and asking: Does this still serve me?
Because here’s the secret: success doesn’t come from squeezing yourself into someone else’s structure. It comes from creating your own.
If you’re a neurodivergent business owner or professional who feels stuck between “what I’m told I should do” and “what works for me,” I’d love to have a conversation with you... no pressure, no polished script... just space to explore what’s next.
Until next time, take care of your energy (and yes, treat yourself to the slippers if you need them).
