Need for Transparency in Healthcare

Need for Transparency in Healthcare

Transparency in any business is a quality that a company must possess. We are living in a time where people can avail information at the tip of their fingers, in just a few seconds. People can now share feedback through reviews and ratings, comment on your social media platforms and share their data online, within minutes. With this type of power being given to people, maintaining transparency seems pretty critical, especially in the healthcare industry.

Because of the vast information available to the masses, it is vital that healthcare providers use these platforms to apply transparency throughout their organization. Various benefits can be availed by healthcare practitioners by following transparency in their daily routine.

The first step to introduce transparency in the organization will be to start internally with all the employees. They need to be aware about all the important matters going on in the organization and the changes that might come along in the future. Employees must be kept in the loop, which in turn makes them feel that they are valued.

The employees in return need to focus on patient engagement by keeping them informed. Patients need to be made aware about their upcoming appointments, payments and what the doctor is trying to achieve. Patients will appreciate the doctor’s honesty and their continued effort to keep them updated with the ongoing changes. They will know that their health care provider cares about their health. This is the beginning of evoking loyalty in the patient.

Healthcare professionals are more accountable with transparency in the system, which leads to a better patient outcome. Many may not realize the power of transparency and increasing productivity yet, but companies will definitely learn this sooner or later.

Transparency has the potential to lower costs through productivity, but apart from that, it also encourages the staff to make decisions that help the healthcare administration save money. For example: When the workforce is aware about the costs involved in their department, they start to make more financial based decisions.

The rewards that come along with creating and maintaining transparency in a healthcare environment help motivate the administrators to work harder, and towards a more information shared workspace.

Things are changing fast these days. I meet Doctors and Administrators of small clinics to large hospitals and feel they are quite open these days to discuss and invite us to streamline their processes, deploy IT solution across organization and empower their teams to manage & run by themselves with all necessary information. Staff involvement in operations (hospital administration and operations, not surgery :) ) has improved significantly. Especially in cases where there are multi-location hospitals/clinics in India, the top Doctors (Directors/Administrators) are cautiously delegating to their peers while they themselves remain focused in their core strengths. They are open to monitor their organization via web-apps, mobile apps, email and so-forth.
