A New Chapter

A New Chapter

As the saying goes, it’s not about the destination; it’s the journey. This week, my 32-year journey at Target comes to an end. I am filled with gratitude for a career I never would have imagined when I was growing up in rural Indiana, as the first of my family (but not the last!) to graduate from college. While I am incredibly excited for my next chapter, I will miss the Target team and partners, past and present, who deeply influenced me over the past three decades. The farewell festivities in recent weeks have reinforced for me what a wonderful ride it has been.

People, purpose and impact have been at the center of all my roles at Target. I’ve had the privilege to meet, work with, and build lasting connections with hundreds and thousands of team members and partners who have bestowed life and leadership lessons upon me that have shaped who I am – and who I am becoming. The wisdom you have shared has helped me build a life and career beyond my wildest dreams.

One thing is certain: I will continue to be driven by my purpose to be of service to others. Service is in my DNA, instilled in me by my parents and grandmas and cultivated by siblings, friends, colleagues, mentors/mentees, sponsors, allies and, of course, my husband, Bill.

For more than a decade, I have thought about and hoped to one day write a book, so I am very excited to announce that my book will be published in the spring of 2025. I am honored that The Open Field, a publishing imprint by Maria Shriver and Penguin Random House will be my publisher. I will share updates as the pages unfold in the months ahead.

I’d also like to offer an open invitation to share and learn together at www.layshaward.com/newsletter, where you can join my email list and sign up for regular updates on life, leadership and learning.

I believe there’s a reason and season for all things in life. As my season at Target comes to an end, I am pausing, taking three deep breaths and preparing to step onto the next stage. Carrying countless memories and lessons from all of you with me – and cheering for Team Target from the sidelines – and in the aisles every week. Onward!
