Answers of the Week
#1. How would you improve Facebook Birthdays?
1. Describe the product: FB birthday is a utility/feature used by users in the below ways:
Save/update their birthdays.
Wish their friends, famailies birthdays. they can also choose to view previous/upcoming birthdays. They can post a message on thei feed or send a personal message via messenger.
Fb used to send a personalised video on birthdays to users which they can share with their friends.
2. Assumptions/Ask questions to interviewer:
What are we looking to improve? Is it engagement with the feature or drive revenue? Are we looking to target mobile or desktop users? Is there specific age group of users in mind? do they have a specific goal in mind?
3. Choosing a goal: We want to improve engagement for the feature for mobile users globally. Since FB is a global paltform where people are connected with their families and friends with the intent to share updates about their lives, this can be via sharing milestone like a new job, moving to a new city or even celebrating and wishing on birthdays and anniversaries.
4. Identify the user groups:
Power users: Who actively use FB multiple times a day and have a friend list of 1000+ users.
Casual user: Who uses FB once a day and have around 500-1000 frinds.
Casual users: Who logs in once a week and has very few friends … Read More and Give Feedback
#2. Design a way for people to find apartments.
1. Ask clarification questions
- rent or buy an apartment? Rent
- am I designing this product or a startup that has no other product or for a company that has other products (eg. the company owns apartments, agents, and other apps)? Startup
- is it global or a specific geolocation? I will start with a metroarea in US if there is no preference. If the pilot product is successful, then we can expand it to other markets.
- what is the biz goal for this product? if it's a new product in a startup, then I will choose acquisition as the biz goal
- who are the people, agent or apartment hunters? apartment hunters
2. Set (or confirm with the interviewer) the objective of the product
- Finding an apartment can be overwhelming, the objective of this product is to provide an easy and (possibly) hand-holding way to help apartment hunters to find their dream place.
3. User groups
We already touched a bit in step 1. We focus on apartment hunters. Within apartment hunters, they can be segmented into
- short-term (monthly)
- long-term (6month, annual,...) … Read More and Give Feedback
Assumption - The product is an advertising platform where a seller can publish their ads and they are directly presented to consumers. Monetization for advertising platforms is usually based on:
Impressions - number of ads served
Clicks - Users actually clicking on the ad
Actions - Users performing certain actions such as signup or add to cart after clicking on the ad.
The problem states no ads were served which means the impressions revenue is down. The problem states that revenue plummeted which would imply this was sudden and we didn't notice any steady decline.
Advertising platforms have two distinct user groups:
Publishers - advertisers who define a campaign and post it on the platform.
Consumers - Customers who see the ad in a platform such as facebook or instagram.
To root cause this issue I would dig into metrics for both set of users.
Publishers -
Daily average advertisements published on platform.
DAU for publishers
If there is a drop in either of these metrics I would look investigate the following possible reasons
Technical reasons:
New code deployed to the publishing platform
Infrastructure health issues - broken servers or provider outages … Read More and Give Feedback
