3moBalancing Innovation with Patient Safety: As the NHS embraces digital transformation, patients are at the heart of both progress and risk. The approval of Medicus Health’s new electronic patient record (EPR) system, marks the first major upgrade to GP IT in 25 years. Promising faster, more joined-up care, it offers benefits like improved access, smoother consultations and better integration with national NHS services. For patients-- it could mean more timely and informed care. But... the tragic impact of the Synnovis cyberattack — which disrupted thousands of appointments and contributed to a patient’s death — reminds us that digital innovation carries serious risks. When core systems fail, patients suffer. Innovation must never come at the cost of safety. As the NHS invests in modern tools, it must equally invest in strong cybersecurity, resilient infrastructure and patient trust. Because the future of healthcare isn’t just digital — it’s personal.
