#NorthConnex Project
Notwithstanding all other benefits, the primary objective of the #NorthConnex project was to solve 2 key issues – Connect the missing link between M1 and M2 enabling quicker travel times and the reduction in traffic congestion on Pennant Hills (PH) road one of the most accident prone road in Australia, by directing national freight carriers and long-distance transport via the 9km long NorthConnex tunnel with estimated projects cost of $3B.
Back in 2015, I posed a question- What are the strategic change initiatives/decisions/controls that are being designed to influence the behaviours of the motorists, for the project to meet the target number of NorthConnex users? What are tactical plans put in place for PH road when the tunnel opens that will complement the objective of the overall project? E.g. Dropping the overall speed limit to 60km/hr, introduction of bus lanes as required and/or connecting internal roads across PH road with the introduction of traffic lights. The response I received back then (image attached) was a transport study will be connected to look at future public transport options once NorthConnex is open, and there were no changes planned for PH road as part of NorthConnex project.
5 years since, we are couple of months away from the opening of NorthConnex however as of 23rd of May, I understand there has been no signs of this traffic study for PH road initiated, yet.
Why is this important or even relevant for a LinkedIn post?
Although building the tunnel is the most complex enabler/deliverable that has taken time, effort and investment on this project, the building of the tunnel on its own will not be able to deliver on the objective of this project and will fall short of benefits realised. UX image attached has done many rounds on the internet, however is still relevant as it clearly shows that we cannot think about user experience and behaviours as a reactive thought after the event, but plans to influence behaviours need to be weaved and integrated into the strategic direction of the project.
Shout-Out to all my Project SMEs and Change agents who ensure we maintain a sharp focus on the user experience, behaviours, success factors and intended benefits as we execute our plans and influence our stakeholders to stay committed to the project objective!

The benefits of the NorthConnex project include: 1.Reduction in traffic congestion on Pennant Hills Road and surrounding traffic network 2.Quicker travel times between the M1 and the M2a reduction in operating costs for national freight carriers and long-distance transport operators a reduction in heavy traffic and associated noise in local streets 3. An improvement in local air quality. 4. Improved safety and productivity on local, intrastate and interstate freight movements increased infrastructure capacity and efficiency 5. Improved reliability of travel between the M1 and M2 and the Sydney to Brisbane Corridor
In Sydney, Pennant Hills Road took the top spot, in nations crash hot spot.
