The One Class No One Requires and Everyone Needs: Networking 101

If there were a single class that could unlock career opportunities, open doors to mentorship, and fuel professional growth, it would be Networking 101. And yet—no one requires us to take it. No university mandates it. No job description explicitly lists it as a skill. Networking is the single most valuable one-credit class we all need to master.

For leaders, managers, candidates, and colleagues alike, networking isn’t just about meeting people. It’s about cultivating relationships, staying top of mind, and creating a circle of trust and opportunity. In my world of Talent Acquisition, networking is second nature—it has to be. Regardless of your industry or role, you are always networking. The challenge? Most people don’t think of it that way, and when they need their network, they realize too late that they haven't nurtured it.

Three Tips to Always Be Networking (and Recruiting!)

  1. Give Before You Need – The best networkers are those who give without expectation. Share an article, introduce two people who should meet, or send a congratulatory note. Being generous builds goodwill and strengthens relationships long before you ever need to ask for something.
  2. Be Consistently Present – Networking isn’t an event; it’s a habit. Engage with your connections regularly. Comment on posts, send a quick check-in, or grab a virtual coffee. It’s the little moments of engagement that keep you relevant and remembered.
  3. Think Like a Recruiter – You never know when the right opportunity will arise, for you or for someone in your network. Keep an open mind about talent, skills, and connections. If you meet someone impressive, don’t just think about what they can do for you—think about who might benefit from knowing them. Making those connections is powerful.

So, whether you’re a leader looking for your next great hire, a candidate searching for a new opportunity, or a professional who is curious and seeks to grow, remember: Networking isn’t a class you take. It’s a lifelong practice that pays dividends.

Who is one person you can reconnect with today? Send them a note—you never know where the conversation might lead.
