🕊️ Peace Over Profits: Why the Lessons from Iraq Matter More Than Ever in 2025

🕊️ Peace Over Profits: Why the Lessons from Iraq Matter More Than Ever in 2025

The rising tensions between Israel and Iran this summer have forced many of us—myself included—to pause and reflect. With each headline of new missile strikes, covert operations, and escalating rhetoric, it’s impossible not to hear the echoes of a war we’ve already lived through: Iraq.

And yet, we find ourselves standing at another crossroads. One where our decisions will not only shape global diplomacy but also determine how history remembers this moment.

💣 June 2025: Escalation in Real Time

Since late June, we’ve seen:

  • Israel escalate its campaign deep into Iranian territory, targeting nuclear and military sites.

  • Iran retaliate with drones and ballistic missiles, some of which hit civilian infrastructure like hospitals in Beersheba.

  • 452+ lives lost in Iran, with the toll climbing in Israel as well.

  • President Trump openly considering U.S. military involvement, with a final decision expected in the coming days.

  • Bipartisan calls in Congress—including from Rep. Thomas Massie and Sen. Tim Kaine—to reassert war powers and prevent another unchecked war.

This isn’t theoretical. It’s happening now. And the stakes couldn’t be higher.

💸 The Iraq War: A Trillion-Dollar Warning

Let’s not forget what Iraq taught us:

  • $758 billion spent on direct military operations.

  • $1.9 trillion+ when you add interest, veterans' care, and long-term expenses.

  • $8 trillion across all post-9/11 military engagements.

  • Over 1 million lives lost and tens of millions more displaced or traumatized.

The price wasn’t just financial. It was human. Emotional. Intergenerational.

And yet here we are, once again debating intervention—with the same risks and many of the same unknowns.

🧠 What Makes This Moment Different

This time, we’re not just older—we’re wiser. And we have tools we didn’t have two decades ago:

1. PeaceTech is rising

Startups like Anadyr Horizon are using AI to simulate diplomatic outcomes and prevent escalation before it happens. The PeaceTech space is drawing serious VC attention—because peace is finally being seen not just as a moral choice, but as a strategic one.

2. Congress is speaking up

In 2002, Congress voted for war. In 2025, many are fighting to prevent it. New legislation demands that no military action be taken without Congressional approval. This shift matters—and it’s being driven by leaders on both sides of the aisle.

3. The public is watching

After decades of war fatigue and economic strain, the American public is far more cautious about jumping into new conflicts. This cultural shift is powerful—and leaders are taking note.

🌎 Peace Is Not Passive—It’s Powerful Strategy

Here’s what we can do instead of repeating the past:

Reassert checks and balances—Support war powers resolutions to ensure democratic oversight.

Invest in PeaceTech—AI tools, data modeling, and simulation can save lives and prevent war.

Promote diplomacy—The U.S. should lead by example, showing strength through restraint and negotiation.

Redirect defense spending—Just a fraction of the Iraq War budget could fund universal childcare, infrastructure, and clean energy.

🧭 What I Believe

We don’t need another Iraq. We need a smarter future—where peace is the policy, not the afterthought. As business leaders, community builders, and professionals, we have influence. Whether it’s through advocacy, investment, or conversation, we can promote a future where peace drives progress.

👋 Final Thought

We’ve already paid the price of war—economically, emotionally, and morally. We don’t have to pay it again.

Let’s raise our voices now—before decisions are made for us. Before history repeats itself.
