The People Behind the Projects

The People Behind the Projects

🔹 Interviewed by: Chris Watling

🔹 Guest: Alasdair Germain , Chartered Architectural Technologist, HTA Design LLP

In every successful project, there’s more than just a strategy—there’s a story. The People Behind the Projects shines a light on the individuals whose work powers progress, innovation, and impact.

This week, we sat down with Alasdair, to learn more about his journey, understand his thoughts on certain topics, and potential talking points for the wider industry.

Q1: What software tools do you use most often in your workflow? At the concept and planning stage, it begins with sketches, SketchUp, Lumion, Affinity, and CAD to explore ideas and communicate early design intent. As we move into Stage 3, my preferred software is Revit, which enables coordination with other design team members and allows us to visually understand and manage project complexities in 3D. We continue using Revit through to project completion. There isn’t one single software that does it all—each has its strengths depending on the task and the type of output required

Q2: What are the main functions of a building?  In the residential sector, our goal is to create exceptional spaces that people love to live in. While great design starts with aesthetics, my role ensures that performance is equally considered. This means integrating key technical elements such as thermal, waterproofing, airtightness, fire rating, product lifespan, and full compliance with building regulations, so that our designs don’t just look good but perform brilliantly too.

Q3: What is the role of AI and automation in design? AI and automation are already playing a significant role in the design process and delivery of work. They enable designers to explore ideas and iterate through their thought processes more efficiently, working at a higher level of detail in a shorter amount of time. This not only accelerates decision-making but also enhances the ability to test, refine, and visualise complex concepts earlier in the project. However, I do wonder whether it might hinder our development if we become overly reliant on AI for support.

Q4: What is the future of the architectural profession itself? Not sure what the future holds I think there are many visions and ideas of what it should be. I think pushing boundaries and always setting a high bar for are industry will lead us to a better future.

Q5: What are the key phases of architectural design? In relation to the RIBA stages, I believe Stage 3—Developed Design—is critical to get right, as it marks the beginning of formal coordination between the design team and product manufacturers. At this stage, the design moves from concept to reality, with key decisions being made on materials, systems, and construction methods. Clear communication and collaboration are essential to ensure that design intent is preserved while addressing practical constraints such as budget, compliance, and buildability. Missteps here can lead to costly changes later, so investing time in thorough coordination sets the foundation for a successful project.
