A Person is Known by the Company She Keeps
We often hear the saying, "A person is known by the company she keeps." But how exactly does our circle of influence form? It usually happens through a subtle yet significant process:
Situation 1: The Pickleball Scenario
Imagine coming across social media advertisements for pickleball. Influenced by appealing images and peer activities, you decide to join in. Initially, you might genuinely enjoy playing, or perhaps you feel pressured to continue just to seem "cool."
Soon, you start sharing equipment, schedules, and coordinating games. After the matches, you share snacks or meals, forming closer bonds. Gradually, conversations move beyond pickleball. Subconsciously, you start absorbing the group's values and lifestyle.
If this is consciously chosen because you genuinely enjoy it, there is nothing wrong. But, if it's driven by social pressure, you're at risk of forming superficial relationships based on fake enjoyment.
Situation 2: School Parents Gathering
Every morning at around 9:15 am, I drop my daughter at her playschool and then head to the office. Often, I notice parents gathering near the school gates. Many of them, still in their night suits, discuss various topics, seemingly without clear purpose.
There's no judgement here if they consciously choose this interaction. However, if these interactions are due to social pressure—simply joining in because others do—it could unknowingly shape their perspectives, habits, and ultimately their lives in ways they haven't consciously chosen.
Importance of Conscious Choice
In today's digital age, with hundreds or thousands of "friends" on social media, distinguishing genuine relationships from mere acquaintances is crucial.
It is a superpower to consciously select who truly influences your life.
Being selective about who you let into your circle is perhaps one of the most significant choices you can make.
Thoughts to Destiny: The Power of Influence
It is rightly said:
The circle you choose directly influences your thoughts, guiding the chain reaction that shapes your destiny. Choose consciously, choose wisely, because your company defines who you are.
'Trust the wait. Embrace the uncertainty. Enjoy the beauty of becoming. When nothing is certain, anything is possible.
