Physiology of my Dreams

We live in a country where people have great dreams of change, the dream may seem unlikely, but that doesn’t mean it is not possible. Dreams are only unlikely due to the present situations of things which mean that when things improve the dream also becomes fulfilled.

First and foremost, let me talk about how good physiology is, before talking about how great physiology can be.

Physiology is the study of the normal function of the human body which means that what we do is important to the survival of human race.

In fact, the fact that we are gathered here to celebrate an icon means that there is something good about physiology because you can only celebrate what is good as it is not normal to celebrate what is bad.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is obvious that physiology is good but I imagine a dream where physiology becomes great.

I dream of a physiology that even without the aid of a microscope students can see beyond the scope of the course. It is until you know that range of a thing that you can understand its limit. Like we all know that knowledge is power but the knowledge of how to apply that knowledge is even more powerful as it is common knowledge that there is a difference between knowledge and applied knowledge. Just like there is a difference between math and applied math. For you to apply what you know you must be aware of its existence just like for an eagle to fly it must be aware of its wings and that they are used for flying. So as physiologist we can only fly until we know what we have because you can only use what you have to get what you want.

I dream of a physiology that students and professionals accept and are proud of their role in building the basis for man’s health. Because it is until you accept your role that you can be proud of it only then can you be the best at it? For there is a difference between a painter and a paint maker and each of this individuals proudly play their role, because what good is a painter that has no paint to paint with. So as physiologist let us identify our role as not the painter but the paint maker.

I dream of a physiology that is unique not the one mixed up with philosophy, physiotherapy or even psychology because to be identified as the best you must at least have an identity. It is good to know who you are but it is even better for people to know who you are. For a lion is proud because it is aware of the fact that it can harm humans but until humans know that it is dangerous that is when it becomes respected. So as physiologist let us do our best to have an identity in order for us to be respected and let us remember that striving to be the best is for our own good.

I dream of a physiology where lecturers recognize me not because I disturb them in their offices but because I disturb them in class especially with my thought provoking questions. It is my ambition to be the object of recognition especially to an authority in a university they may be the minority but they are definitely the priority. It is true I want recognition but I also want the circumstance to the right one. My HOD once said that students are like a software and hence needs a hardware to function properly. To fulfill the physiology of our dreams all hands must be on deck.

I dream of a physiology that is an end and not a means to an end because the end is the final destination of a journey. Physiology should be a place where the best come to rest and not a road passed through by the rest who are on a quest to be with the best that having their rest. It is good to be the best at what you do but what good is it to do what is not the best. So I implore relevant stakeholders to help make physiology one of the best.

I dream of a physiology with state of the art facilities and not facilities in a bad state. Although I understand the state of the Nigerian economy but I still state that relevant authorities should please do their best in order to avoid a state of emergency. Since good facilities give birth to good results, great facilities also give birth to great result just like a mechanized farmer is far better than a subsistent farmer. So I implore relevant stakeholders to help provide great facilities.

I dream of a physiology that one day wins a Nobel prize even if not for anything for the fact that it is a thing of joy to be recognized as one of the best in one’s field of endeavor I am not unaware of the fact that some Nigerians have won great awards both in Africa and the world at large but that is still not a reason not to have at least one Nobel Prize in Physiology.

It would have been a wonderful present if my dreams were fulfilled today as it is my birthday. Although Rome wasn’t built in a day but where there is a will there’s a way.
