Possible To Control Multiple Myeloma Like Chronic Conditions

Dr. Tengku Ahmad Hidayat Tengku K. Aziz, Consultant Clinical Haematologist at Beacon Hospital, highlights the significant progress in the treatment of multiple myeloma, a condition once deemed difficult to manage. Thanks to recent breakthroughs, patients now have a greater chance of survival and can continue to lead fulfilling lives.

For patients who are unable to undergo bone marrow transplants, various drug therapies are available, including proteasome inhibitors (PIs), monoclonal antibodies, CAR T-cell therapy, and bispecific antibodies. These options offer hope, enabling better disease management.

In Malaysia, Dr. Tengku Ahmad Hidayat notes, patients have access to a wide range of treatment options, from first-line to third-line therapies. However, while progress is being made, CAR T-cell therapy remains limited due to its high cost and availability.

Another challenge in the fight against multiple myeloma is the shortage of haematologists, particularly in rural areas. Addressing this gap is critical to ensuring that more patients across Malaysia receive the care they need.

Despite these hurdles, the future of multiple myeloma treatment in Malaysia looks promising, and with continued advancements, more patients will have access to life-saving therapies.
