The Power of the Pivot: When to Hold On & When to Let Go - 🎤Mic Drop 6
Let’s talk about what they don’t tell you in leadership books.
Leadership isn’t just about holding the mic. It’s about knowing when to pass it.
It’s not the meetings, the metrics, or the mission that’s the hardest part—it’s the moments behind closed doors where you have to make decisions that cost you sleep, peace, and sometimes, people.
I’ve had to make some powerful pivots:
⚡ Board members resigning—and realizing I had to grieve the loss of partnerships, not just positions.
⚡ Wearing 90% of the nonprofit hat—and finally admitting it wasn’t sustainable (even if I could pull it off).
⚡ Grieving leadership dynamics that shifted without warning and hit harder than I expected—not professionally, but personally.
⚡ Feeling the ache of transition while still being the one expected to smile, rally, and keep the vision alive.
These weren’t just plot twists—they were soul checks. And here’s what I learned: every shift invites clarity.
🔎 Clarity about your PURPOSE.
🔋 Clarity about your CAPACITY.
🧭 Clarity about your CALLING.
Real leadership isn’t about clinging. It’s about evolving—even when that means letting go of what used to work.
Ask Yourself:
What needs fighting for?
What needs surrendering to?
What needs restructuring—not just in your org, but in your life?
Too many leaders wear burnout like a badge of honor, as if suffering is proof of passion. But I’m here to say:
💣 TRUTHBOMB: If you're in a season of “holding it all together,” ask yourself— “Is this still mine to carry?” Because grace lives on the other side of that answer.
This isn't just nonprofit talk.
This is:
🧠 C-Suite recalibration
💼 Entrepreneurial realignment
🎤 Mission-driven truth for anyone who's ever led with heart—only to wonder: Now what?
🔥 Real Talk from the Trenches of Leadership
When I first launched The Autism Hero Project, I had a fire in my belly and a vision so loud it drowned out fear.
Eight years in, the mission is still alive—but the village? Sometimes it’s grown, and other times, it’s shrunk before my eyes.
What do you do when the dream is still vivid, but the support gets blurry?
You pivot with purpose.
You stop white-knuckling what was, and start rebuilding with what is.
Today, I choose to lead differently:
💙 With boundaries that protect my peace.
💙 With bold decisions rooted in vision, not validation.
💙 With unshakable trust in divine timing, even when the path isn't clear.
🧠 Reflective Leadership Check-In:
Want to know if you’re in a season of pivot? Ask yourself:
✔️ What’s draining me that once energized me?
✔️ Who around me is contributing vs. consuming?
✔️ Where am I over-functioning to compensate for others’ underperformance?
✔️ What am I scared to say out loud because I don’t want to face the truth?
Now, answer this:
🔑 If nothing changes… what will this cost me in 6 months?
Then, breathe—and move.
✅ Practical Solutions for the Pivot Season:
🔄 Conduct a Role Audit: What’s yours to own, delegate, pause, or release entirely?
💬 Have Hard Conversations: Delayed honesty creates prolonged dysfunction.
🔌 Reconnect to Purpose: Revisit your “why”—it’s your compass, not your comfort zone.
🛠️ Build with the Willing: Let go of the fantasy team and build with those who show up.
“We don’t lose power when we pivot—we reclaim it. Because every time we let go, we make space for something greater to rise.”

5moWow, Tamika! This really spoke to me. It’s great to see leadership framed with this kind of honesty and emotional depth. It challenged me to reflect not just on what I’m doing—but why I’m still doing it, regardless of the role/title I hold. Grateful for the perspective. 🙏🏿 👏🏿 🙌🏿
