A practical guide to strategy implementation
I often hear that strategy implementation is so difficult. Does it have to be? Actually, it may not be as difficult as you think, if you know how.
🎯 First, of course, you define your strategy. Let's assume that this has already been worked out. What may still be missing for success are the clearly defined goals you want to achieve. Make sure that the goals are measurable, realistic, and achievable.
💪 Now it's time to define the required actions to realize the strategy: what steps do you need to take to achieve these goals? Make sure that each step is clearly defined and understandable, and that the steps build on each other.
🗓️ Create a schedule: Parallel to the definition of the different phases, you have probably already thought about how long the individual activities will take and by when they must be completed.
🛣️ A road map provides a good overview of the entire implementation process. This contains the major phases and strategic implementation areas, as well as the necessary sub-steps as well as milestones. Such a road map also supports the communication about the strategy implementation.
🦸 Successfully executing your strategy requires making sure you have the necessary resources in place. Identify all resources you need and make sure they are available at the right time and on the right scale.
🪢 To ensure that the implementation of your strategy runs smoothly, you need to define the governance structure (e.g. roles and responsibilities of everyone involved). Make sure everyone is competent and qualified to perform their tasks.
🚩 You should consistently monitor and review progress on a monthly basis to ensure that your strategy is being successfully implemented. Verify that all people and teams are completing their tasks at the agreed time.
🚨 An important success factor is the risk analysis. Determine early on the risks, where and what they are, and establish plans and measures to mitigate them so that they do not jeopardize the implementation of the strategy.
🪃 Remember, to be successful, you must be able to adapt and respond to change. Make sure you are flexible and can implement changes quickly and effectively.
🗣️ And, of course, very importantly: communicate. And do so on an ongoing basis. Communicate about your strategy, the goals, how they are to be achieved, progress, risks and their mitigation, successes, examples and remember to seek regular feedback on how things are going. This way, all team members will know what needs to be done, will be motivated, and will be committed to working together towards the goal.
Does this look like a reasonable way forward? For someone like you, this should not be so difficult.
