Yoga: A New Possibility

A Blog Series by Dr. Bharat Thakur

“Emotions are not just feelings - they are waves of prana moving through our being, each with its own unique signature and rhythm."

The Pranic Nature of Emotions

When we speak of emotions, we often think of them as abstract experiences happening somewhere in our mind. But emotions are far more tangible - they are specific patterns of pranic flow, each with its distinct vibration, intensity, and movement. Let me share what years of observation and practice have revealed about how prana manifests in different emotional states.

Anger: The Upward Surge

"In anger, prana becomes like a flame shooting upward, consuming our awareness and clarity."

When anger arises, prana rushes upward with tremendous force. We feel it as heat rising in the body, pressure in the chest and head accompanied by rapid and shallow breathing, muscular tension, a sensation of explosive energy seeking release.

The pranic signature of anger is like a wildfire. It begins in one place and stays alive as long as it is fed by the forest of our thoughts. Understanding this pattern allows us to work with it consciously, channeling its energy rather than being consumed by it.

Fear: The Frozen Flow

“Fear is prana caught in the grip of paralysis, creating stagnation where there should be flow."

When we are overcome by fear, our flight or fight mode is activated. It is the same mechanism of our nervous system which prepared us to either fight or run from a prey in the forest. Energy becomes frozen in the lower belly, the breath becomes shallow and constricted, cold sensations spread through the limbs, a feeling of heaviness sets in and the natural flow of prana becomes blocked. So fear can be debilitating because it interrupts our vital energy flow.

Sorrow: The Downward Pull

“Grief pulls prana downward and inward, creating a vacuum in the heart center."

Sorrow has its own distinct pranic signature where the energy in the body feels heavy and descending, the chest area feels compressed and heavy, breathing becomes labored and our overall vitality is diminished.

Understanding this pattern helps us accept the natural process of grief while preventing it from depleting our vital energy. It helps to develop ‘Sashki bhav’ or the ‘witness consciousness’ where we learn to observe our pain rather than get entangled in it.

Joy: The Expansive Wave

“In joy, prana dances freely, expanding outward like ripples on a lake."

Research shows our heart emits an electromagnetic field which can indicate our state of emotion. When we are happy, relaxed, there is a coherence in this field which others can sense and receive. Light, effortless breathing, warmth spreading throughout the body, feeling of expansion in the chest and increased vitality are signs of this pranic pattern. This natural, expansive flow of prana represents our optimal state.

Bliss: The Unified Field

“In states of bliss, prana moves not as separate currents but as a unified field of conscious energy."

When individual pranic currents merge into one, breathing becomes subtle and refined, the body feels light and luminous, the barriers between self and universe dissolve then the energy flows without obstruction or effort. This is a state of bliss where we feel the flow state of consciousness as a constant way of being.

Pain: The Concentrated Point

“Pain is prana focusing intensely at a single point, demanding our attention."

When we are in pain, we may often feel pain in specific areas such as the head, neck, stomach. The pranic pattern of pain indicates energy concentrating at specific points, breath becomes erratic, tension builds around the affected area and disrupts pranic flow in surrounding regions and creates an overall imbalance.

Working with Emotional Prana

Understanding these pranic patterns gives us powerful tools for emotional mastery:

Awareness

As mentioned earlier, growing the ‘sakshi’ or witness is foundational to tackling our emotions. Learn to observe the precise way prana moves in different emotional states. Notice how emotions affect the breath, muscles and posture. Simply remain aware of the various changes in the body which in itself can be a grounding experience.

Conscious Breathing

Use breath to modify pranic patterns. Becoming aware of the breath pattern and regulating it consciously can restore a sense of equilibrium. Practicing pranayama techniques regularly can keep our moods and emotions in check. The technique of Anulom Vilom or alternate nostril breathing can help restore balance in the pranic system after intense periods of stress.

Brahmari Pranayama can help clear mental clutter and bring about harmony in the nervous system.

Energy Direction

Learn to consciously direct pranic flow by using visualization to guide the Prana. While in the midst of rage or grief, gently directing the Prana towards the centre of the chest and becoming aware of Anahata Chakra is a way to uplift our energy and feel better.

Integration

Understanding that all emotional states are valid pranic expressions and learning to flow with rather than fight against emotional energies is key to emotional health and pranic vibrancy. Remember there is information in these pranic patterns which can be brought to our awareness and then we simply delete file.

The Transformative Power of Pranic Awareness

“When we understand emotions as prana in motion, we gain the power to transform our emotional landscape."

Greater emotional intelligence, improved ability to handle challenging states, enhanced overall well-being, deeper states of awareness, more authentic emotional expression are the results of pranic awareness.

Emotions are not our enemies - they are expressions of life force moving through us. By understanding their pranic patterns, we can work with them more skillfully, using their energy for transformation and growth.

May this understanding help us navigate our emotional landscape with greater awareness and grace.
