Presidents Day: A Reflection on Leadership, Service, and Our Shared Responsibility

This Monday, the United States observes Presidents Day—a time to reflect on the leadership that has shaped our nation - influences world events - and the values that continue to guide us forward.

When I was younger, this holiday honored two pivotal figures separately: George Washington, who built a fledgling republic and humbly declined a kingship, and Abraham Lincoln, who fought to preserve that republic, end slavery, and reunite a fractured nation—giving his life in the process.

Over time, these commemorations merged into a single day, now often marked by retail sales. But perhaps the intent was deeper—to symbolize the collective duty of presidents past and present to strive toward a more perfect union. True leadership isn’t just about power; it’s about service, sacrifice, and the courage to advance equity and inclusion.
