Many investors are leaning on experience as uncertainty continues across Private Equity. Volatility, reduced exits and tighter capital availability mean leadership decisions carry even greater weight. In this climate, a CFO with a proven track record can offer security, clearer forecasting and the confidence that comes from having navigated tough conditions before. However, in some sectors, the supply of PE-proven CFOs remains tight. Where the right fit isn’t immediately available, investors may need to look beyond the obvious shortlist. Backing an emerging CFO can open up fresh potential but knowing when to take that step, and how to de-risk it, is critical.
In this environment, specialist insight is key to balancing risk and reward. Getting that judgement call right can make all the difference to protecting value and driving growth in 2025.

In a complex macro climate, the right CFO is pivotal to performance. A turbulent and uncertain economy means CFOs are caught in a cycle of rolling forecasts and tight cash control. At the same time, the drive towards a successful exit requires constant focus across operational and commercial performance and strategic value creation. Our research delves into the attributes and support CFOs need to succeed in this high-pressure environment, and strategies for how they and their investors can set themselves up for success.
Our CFO Analysis survey was completed by 146 CFOs from large and mid-sized PE-backed portfolio companies. Most of the CFOs who responded are seasoned PE professionals, with 86% having more than three years of experience, almost a third (30%) having more than ten years of expertise and 72% having worked in two or more private equity roles.
