PTHR's Dynamic Dozen: 12 Pathways to Progressive People Practice

Part 1 - Resident CPOs

Over the next 12 weeks, we're going to launch something new (ish - some of it we've leaked already) about how we - at People & Transformational HR Ltd - are tackling this barmy world head on. We happen to have 12 things, hence the Dynamic Dozen frame.

This is Part 1, and it has been in development for a few years now. But we're ready to roll. Consider this the teaser launch as we reveal (in between our weekly Dynamic Dozen updates), a spotlight on each of our Fabulous Five new faces who will operate with and under the banner of PTHR (and of course, in their own right).

Welcome to the PTHR Resident CPOs.

We've seen things shift when it comes to strategic leadership and value creation coming from more enlightened and progressive people leaders— be they Chief People Officers, Directors of HR/People & Culture, or CHROs. Often, driving transformation, delivering value through culture and talent and in some cases, transitions to COO and CEO roles.

I'm NOT going to use that "...table" quote. We're already there, and in some cases, Strategic People Leaders are at the head of it with the CEO, CFO and CTO.

What's evident is also this:

  • The People "portfolio" is getting bigger, broader, more diverse and complex and shows no signs of getting any smaller. So the portfolio is probably the lightest you'll experience now. Forget what it was before.

  • People, Culture, Skills, Talent, Agility, Mindsets, Wellbeing, Fortitude - all head the Exec Board's challenge list alongside capitalisation/budgets, digitisation, automation, efficiency, productivity (whatever we mean by that), regulation, de-globalisation, climate and sustainability, plus competition and the wonky markets. The list is big, but those people-related issues all have a significant part to play in the other factors and in their own right.

  • As a result of this realisation, even the micro (but high-potential) enterprises are getting in on people, culture, skills, and talent earlier in their growth and funding cycles. Investors are insisting on it, and acquisitions are often looking for people as much as they are code/product.

  • Some organisations are chucking vulgar amounts of money at talent. Not just product, but what's in their heads and comes through their hands.

  • Wherever you look, be it Gartner, Deloitte, the World Economic Forum, the OECD and Mercer - skills are the hot topic. Yes, AI and automation, but even then, what skills will shift and be needed as we automate algorithmic work?

  • Business Models are changing, morphing and reforming faster than ever. So organisational capabilities aren't just technical genius, they're adapting at velocity and adopting shorter learning and maturity curves. The game is in overdrive, and supersonic speeds are the norm. Standing still for even a short period will leave you painfully - and potentially permanently - behind and nullified.

So, with all that said, it takes a special kind of CPO to help and lead on such complex, emergent, and experimental operating models, capabilities, and culture shifts.

That's why we've been working with people who understand this and who understand us at PTHR. We might be small in size, but we've always said we're huge on ambition and more devoted than most to a mission and vision that's more exponential than we, alone, could ever be.

So market turbulence and emerging new models for strategic power in a more unorthodox form, meet PTHR's all new Spin Out Venture:

Resident CPOs - all HR 3.0 ready!

  • 5 hugely influential (ranked in that list in some cases) people professionals.

  • 5 massively experienced commercial, public service, niche market and purpose-led business leaders who happen to identify themselves as Senior HR Professionals.

  • 5 incredibly real, soulful, generous and articulate individuals who mix humility with assured confidence and capability.

  • 5 magicians (one literally - big clue there) and alchemists of change, adaptability, agility and imaginative practice.

Over the next 5 weeks (in between our weekly Dynamic Dozen updates - yes, we've been THAT busy), we'll let you know who they are. N, B, J, V and J is all I'll say for now.

But what IS this offer?

  1. Fractional, interim or any form of flexible strategic people leads (CPOs/HRDs) whatever any client or partner might need. Especially suitable for scaling start-ups, transitioning growth enterprises, mergers and de-mergers - non-permanent but powerful leadership additionality.

  2. Specific, project-based Senior People Leadership. Many CPOs have workstacks and accountabilities that extend beyond a single person and their team. So this is plug-and-play, extra heads and hands in harmony with a hyper-busy CPO or HRD

  3. People Strategy from Zero to Hero - award-winning People Strategy proven with all 5 of our Resident CPOs. If you need a turbo charge, forget the practice laps - we'll enter the race with you and help you take the chequered flag in record time.

  4. Coaching, mentoring, and thinking partnerships. When you can't get out of your head and may be tempted to go to an Exec Coach, why not have a ready-made, People Leader as a sense-making thinking partner instead? And tap into our fabulous five who've made it to the top and are now more like Rocket Booster Mentors for you as a Senior People Professional.

Agencies supply this; independents, too, of course. There's a robust and growing Fractional and Interim market.

Yet only this offer comes with the PTHR-endorsed, next stage and progressive pioneering professional "kitemark".

OK, that's our view, but for some time PTHR's stood in the space of being a progressive, future-focused enterprise, we've now found five people who take that to a whole new level.

Consulting, advisory and contracted work will continue to be part of the PTHR offer, but now, we've got five extra superstars who might just be what you're looking for.

The doors are open, and we're ready for business. It might be the specific people who'll entice you, and for now, we'll keep you hanging. However, if you need additional Strategic People Leaders to get you over the line (or even draw the line), we've got what you need right here with us.

Resident CPOs are our way of saying to the market, "give it your best shot, because we've got the champions of the ring with us, we'll see you and meet you in ways you could never imagine".

Great read Perry. I loved this quote…… “I'm NOT going to use that "...table" quote.” That’s great, forget about having a “seat at the table” I’d rather dance on it! Bringing about transformational change! 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼
