Purpose Is the Hidden AI Accelerator

Everyone’s racing to “add AI.” Some are deploying models across entire value chains. Others are still figuring out what AI even means for them.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: very few can say why they’re doing it - beyond “shareholder expectations” or “efficiency gains.”

That missing why is the silent risk at the centre of the AI gold rush.

From VUCA to BANI

Yesterday’s “VUCA” (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) sounds almost quaint. We’re now in BANI: Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, Incomprehensible.

Technology accelerates everything, but speed without direction just means you crash sooner.

Purpose Before Platform

When an organisation knows its purpose (and when every team member shares it) decisions about AI become dramatically better:

  • Strategic fit: You can distinguish hype from real opportunity.

  • Ethical clarity: You know where automation enhances your mission and where it erodes trust.

  • Adoption velocity: People rally behind change when it obviously serves the “why.”

Without that clarity, AI investments default to vanity metrics and cost-cutting. When those quick wins stall, so does the culture.

The Human Operating System

AI can replicate tasks, but it can’t supply meaning. Purpose is the human operating system that lets organisations thrive when algorithms rewrite the playbook overnight.

Think of it as the north star for machine age choices - a way to keep technology in service of strategy and meaning, not the other way around.

The Real ROI

CHROs often tell me they only getting budget for “people work” if it’s framed as AI-related. Here’s the secret: that’s not a stretch.

Investing in purpose is the way to ensure your AI spend pays off, because a team aligned on why it exists will out-innovate any purely efficiency-driven initiative.

Your Move

Before you automate, align. Before you chase the next model release, surface your reason for being.

AI will keep evolving. Competitive advantage will keep shrinking. But a clearly known and lived purpose - shared across the organisation - is the one differentiator that technology can’t copy.
