Pushing the Limits

Pushing the Limits

What did I think when I wanted to run an 8K National Women's Marathon in Washington, DC?

Initially, I was focused on whether I would accomplish this with underlying health issues. I shared my plans with my doctor to partner on what steps and supplies I needed to achieve my goal. Then, I checked with my oldest daughter to see if she would join me on the walk and run to cultivate another bonding memory. The outcome I wanted to achieve was to finish, even if I walked the entire way. I tried to move according to my own pace.

I began my journey of preparation in January 2023. I bought my walking shoes and socks at a place specializing in running shoes. I started my walking journey 3 to 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes in preparation for the run. As I got closer to the marathon date, I walked further into my neighborhood, even when I didn't feel like it. Did I do everything correctly to prepare? Absolutely NOT!!! Could I have eaten healthier along the way - of course! I gave myself grace.

The day finally arrived in May 2023. I kept asking myself whether I was pushing the limits. I was nervous and still carried doubts about completing the marathon. During the race, I continued to ask myself these questions - why am I doing this while my legs ached in pain? What's the point? Then the optimistic side of me kicked in. I continued telling myself I could do it and would do it. Life has prepared me for resiliency and to push through because greater awaits.

I'll share some strategies I implemented before, during, and after the race.

1. Set ambitious goals: Pushing the limit requires a mindset of constantly striving for more. Set challenging goals that need you to push beyond your comfort zone.

 2. Break big goals into smaller tasks: Breaking big goals into smaller, manageable tasks allows you to focus on one step at a time and gives you a sense of progression and accomplishment.

3. Get out of your comfort zone: Pushing the limit means stepping out and trying new things. Challenge yourself to do something that scares you or makes you uncomfortable. This can help you grow and develop new skills.

4. Embrace failure and learn from it: Failure is a part of pushing the limit. Instead of being discouraged by failure, view it as an opportunity to learn, improve, and return stronger. Analyze what went wrong and adjust your strategy accordingly.

5. Surround yourself with supportive people: A robust support system can significantly impact your ability to push the limit. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, challenge you, and provide encouragement when needed.

 6. Prioritize self-care: Pushing the limit can be physically and mentally demanding. Take care of yourself by getting enough rest, eating healthily, and engaging in activities that help you relax and recharge.

7. Seek feedback and guidance: Asking for feedback and guidance from mentors, coaches, or experts in your field can provide valuable insights and help you improve. Be open to constructive criticism and use it to refine your strategies.

8. Stay focused and eliminate distractions: Staying focused on your goals is essential to push the limit. Minimize distractions, including turning off negative thoughts.

 9. Practice discipline and consistency: Pushing the limit requires discipline and consistent effort. Create routines and habits that support your goals, and stick to them even when motivation wavers.

10. Keep a positive mindset: Maintaining a positive attitude and believing in your abilities is crucial when pushing the limit. Surround yourself with positivity, practice gratitude, and visualize your success to stay motivated and determined.

My daughter and I crossed the finish line. I was tired, hungry, and thirsty. I faced no medical complications. Even though the race was challenging, I felt energized, inspired, and fulfilled by my journey and progress.

It's important to note that pushing the limits is a subjective experience, and everyone's journey and limitations may vary. Defining what pushing the boundaries means for you personally and continually reassessing and adjusting your goals accordingly is essential.

When was the last time you pushed the limits, and what happened?
