Green Line groundbreaking

Shovels have officially hit the ground for the first phase of the Green Line LRT. With representatives from all three levels of government in attendance, the groundbreaking ceremony kicked off the Phase 1 project, launching the start of construction on the transformative S.E. Segment of the Green Line.

The segment extends from Shepard (just north of 130 Avenue S.E.) to the future Event Centre/Grand Central Station in Victoria Park. It will build the first 10 stations and 16 kilometres of an overall 46-kilometre vision, before connecting with the future Downtown Segment and into the existing Red and Blue LRT Lines.

A new chapter for Eau Claire Plaza

The newly redesigned Eau Claire Plaza is now officially open. This vibrant, all-season public space will be a hub for community gatherings, festivals, and everyday connections. The plaza, now operated by Parks, is a key part of Calgary’s Downtown Strategy. The City’s $47 million investment in making our downtown more livable, walkable, and resilient included $12 million from contributed from the Province of Alberta’s Municipal Stimulus program.

The reopening marks the final phase of the Eau Claire Area Improvements, a multi-year program that has transformed the area with enhanced public spaces, improved flood protection, and new connections to downtown and the Bow River.

Rolling out more rain barrel rebates

Did you know Calgarians can get a $50 rebate for new rain barrels? Due to popular demand, the rain barrel rebate program has expanded to cover 5,000 total rebates (up from 3,000) on up to three barrels instead of the previous maximum of two.

How it works:

  • Buy a rain barrel from a store of your choosing

  • Submit an application online or in-person with original receipts

  • There’s a limit of three rain barrels per household, at $50/per barrel

  • Wait two to four weeks for the application to be processed

  • If approved, you’ll get your rebate by e-transfer or cheque

  • Applications will close once all rebates are claimed

Thanks for your feedback Miles- just FYI there are many countries that ban Flouride and various other chemicals. I appreciate your info on WHO, which I greatly respect. However there are many evidence based research articles that don’t support adding any harmful chemicals to our drinking water of which fluoride is one, regardless of low ‘safe’ amounts. I appreciate your standpoint, however my stance is on educating people about the importance of dental hygiene and a diet that supports our Gut Microbiome and over all health which lowering our consumption of sugar and highly processed chemicals in our food. I have spoken to my MLA and they are not educated enough to support my stance - thats ok- in time we will see the ramifications. All the best Miles.

Miles Gibson, the City of Calgary can opt out and it has done so before. This LinkedIn is a forum where people can share their opinions. Your comments advising me to contact my MLA is basically repeating my concerns over and over again while this forum allows me to express my opinion to a larger audience and hopefully shed some insight to this concern. As a child who grew up in the system the Federal dental plan needs to offer more than a yearly checkup and a free toothbrush. I am talking about education on consumption of junk food and lack of dental care - brushing ones teeth more than weekly. Also who is the governing body saying that low levels of fluoride is acceptable? Can we not educate these children and adults about dental hygiene rather than add flouride to our water supply? With this same water; We shower and bath in it, water our garden, provide drinking water to our babies and pets, wash our clothes, cook our food, my bird bsth freds Birds and Bees- have ‘they’ tested the outcomes of adding fluoride in all these areas? Can you provide evidence based findings of this toxic chemical being ok at low levels? If a smoker just takes one cigarette a day are they ok?

I’ve been very interested in relocating to Calgary and have actively applied for academic and community support positions over the past two years, though I have not yet found success. I hope that if anyone comes across my message, they might be able to share opportunities or connect me with openings in these fields.
