No, Really! Who is Jesus?
The debate over who Jesus is, is still raging all over the world.
Philosophers of various stripes and pseudo-religious leaders say Jesus was a wise teacher.
New Age leaders say Jesus was very spiritual, a ‘guru’ of some sort, and/or a religious prophet.
Islam says Jesus was a prophet, and the Qur’an even says Jesus was the Messiah.
Some atheists admit Jesus existed, but doubt any and all of His claims of divinity. Some atheists go so far as to say that Jesus was a myth. They do this by stretching historical facts and openly denying the actual historical evidence that shows Jesus really lived.
But..who is Jesus? Let’s take a look at His own words:
In John 5:17, Jesus said, ‘“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”’ Jesus called God the Father His own Father.
In response, the Pharisees wanted to kill Jesus because He called God His Father, making Himself equal with God.
Then a few verses later in John 5:24-25, Jesus said, ‘“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. This is the great, big, wide, Gospel vision you will hear at Christ the King.”’
Jesus Himself said He had the power to give His followers eternal life. He even said that the ‘dead,’ those who were unbelievers, would hear His voice and have life.
So Jesus is claiming equality with the Father in heaven.
In His earthly journey, Jesus had two natures: He was all God and all man (but not a man in the way we’re human). As God the Son on earth, He willingly submitted to the Father’s authority.
Yet, in these verses, He’s claiming divinity for Himself.
A few chapters later, Jesus would say in John 8:58, ‘“Before Abraham was, I am.”’ Then in John 10:30, He would say, ‘“I and the Father are One.”’
So who is Jesus? He is God. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords and you can literally trust Him with your life. That’s the Jesus we proclaim.
